Edinburgh Zoo Director suspended

I am not particularly a fan of anonymous letters ... :(

A storm in a glass of water or something more serious ...???
What is the situation anyway: has the Society suspended the interim director or other ..?

It is interesting how timings of such 'scandals' seem to match up with upcoming events that some may not like. Whatever it may be this time, I wonder why it 'had to' come up now, in such a sensitive period for the zoo. I wonder if it had anything to do with the arrival of the pandas that some are not too happy about...

An anonymous letter with no details revealed about what is being investigated. Why is this even being reported in the media? If the investigation does reveal any misconduct, that would be the time to report it - not now.

And I note the article describes the giant pandas as a "money-spinning" attraction. They must be unaware that every zoo that gets giant pandas loses money on the deal (due to the costs involved).

I agree entirely. I also don't like the way they repeatedly refer to the zoo as an 'attraction'. It's much more than that but talking about it like that makes it seem like nothing more than a wax works museum or a fun fair. But the Scotsman are fairly rubbish on the whole in my view so what can you expect?

Regardless, of innocence or the integrity of the allegations, no doubt the media are reporting on the issue becuse he has been suspended.

The CEO of a major attraction (which it is - a zoo is a public attraction) is suspended over allegations. That a newsworthy story. Doesn't mean the allegations have any basis, and the article didn't state they did - only that the board obviously felt them serious enough to consider they might.

So, Mr. is acting CEO and sundry. What seems to me make this article inappropriate is that an internal + an independent investigation cannot be conducted independently when all the media are breathing down your necks.

I am also none to keen on anonymous allegations ... If an individual within the Zoo has any serious misgivings about their CEO he/she should be free to do so and openly put these forward. If somehow that would have been compromised within the Society by power-mind games that in itself is a serious affair.

Now I do not know Mr. Wilson personally so cannot judge his character and/or conduct. What I am rightfully concerned with is the notion ... "bit of a character" ... "his commercial approach". It thus seems more a battle of minds over policy and direction rather than content (???). Am I right here?

What puzzles me most is that an internal investigation is being leaked to the media. Is there an ulterior motive on the part of an unknown party? Who will stand to gain/lose?

Whilst we shouldn`t speculate on these things, it is true to say that apparently the matter is now in the hands of the police, as he has actually been arrested. This incident aside , there has been alot of unheaval at the zoo recently which is well known, and keepers were having to re-apply for their own jobs etc., with a points system being used to decide who goes where etc,.. understandably, as a result, staff morale is at an all time low.

I will assume that you have contacts within the Lothian and Borders Police, since the allmighty Google News doesn't reveal anything about him having been arrested...

Hi Baldur , you have a PM too.

All those who have tried to prevent the zoo losing its reputation have been dealt with very shoddily, and it is all going to come out in the near future i suspect.

I appreciate feelings run high in issues like this, but please be aware that personal attacks on individuals in situations of this nature could create issues for the Zoochat Forum.

the three years i spent as a manager at edinburgh zoo, were the most unpleasant of my life, the experience ruined my health and i feel that the misery i endured played a part in my being diagnosed with terminal cancer within two years of leaving.
