Berlin Zoo Knut to be stuffed?

There was a programme about him the other day- apparently they asked if there was a Doctor in the Audience and everyone laughed, thinking it was part of the Act. But it wasn't..

I colleague of mine was actually one of the camera men filming Cooper when he died. Random but true :)

Are there any other animals known to have died suddenly in this fashion? Dicksie the African elephant at London Zoo must have toppled into the moat during public opening hours, though she didn't die until considerably later as I know they tried to get her out alive.

Another incident I know of was the male Gorilla 'Makoko' at the Bronx Zoo in 1951- he died in front of a capacity Sunday afternoon crowd when he tripped as he ran along the moat edge and fell into the watermoat, and drowned.
Just a piece of trivia regarding Syd James which is slightly zoologically related. Syd James as well as being fond of a drop of scotch and Miss Windsor was also fond of a bet. One thing which he was not fond of was snakes. However he accepted a part in the Burt Lancaster film Trapeze, filmed at the Cirque D' Hiver, Paris. He played the part of a snake charmer as he needed the money to clear off gambling debts at the time.

Am I Correct in stating that Beau the orangutan who had been hand reared at Twycross drowned in the moat at Blackpool in full view of the visiting public?

He certainly drowned in the 'moat' (its dry now I believe) so it was likely to be during Visitor hours. What the exact circumstances were I don't know. e.g. why did he suddenly walk into the water one day?

Yes the moat is now dry, what exactly happened I do not know, the staff at Twycross were obviously very upset when they heard this news

That certainly must have been in the very early days. The moat in the enclosure was certainly dry when I worked there in 1976. As I recall the chimps, gorillas and orangutans shared the outside enclosure on rota at that time.

No John it was just a few years ago when it happened

An Arab liberty horse collapsed and died during a performance of Bobby Roberts Super Circus a few years ago.

Beau's mother, Gigit, died in the showden at Paignton on a Saturday morning in 2005. A visitor had to alert the keepers when she was seen having convulsions. She was on loan from Twycross.

Also alot of Race Horses have collapsed and died whilst racing as well,it doesn`t just happen at Bobby Roberts Circus.Just for the record have also seen a 8 year old show jumping Horse collapse and die in the areana even before it had jumped anything, the horse had only passed a vet exam 3 days earlier saying it was fit to compete!!

When I was working there they only had one outside enclosure and it was a dry moat.

That's the outdoor enclosure for the Orangutans nowadays. The Gorillas have a newer one plus the converted(ex Chamois) island which is connected.

I don't know why the moat was changed from dry to water- but I think its gone back to being 'dry' again after Beau's mishap. Drowning of Apes in watermoats is still a hazard, even where moats have been made 'safer'.

I note that you did not comment on my postings regarding the deaths of Sydney James and Beau the orangutan. You may think you are the bees knees when you come on here ridiculing zoo directors and twelve year old children knowing for a fact that they will not reply, well I've got news for you , I am a different proposition, you quite clearly stated several weeks ago that you were blocking my postings however you later replied to my comments regarding the sea lions at Edinburgh Zoo and yesterday regarding Anne the elephant. I can certainly assure you that I did not loose any sleep by you blocking me and I am certainly not grateful to you for graciously giving me a second chance, I therefore wish to inform you that I am now blocking you, and no there will certainly not be any second chances!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't want to get involved in whatever is between you and zoogiraffe but would you mind sending him a private message instead next time you feel a need for such emotional outburst. This thread has been free of harsh debate so far and I'd like to keep it that way and more into relevant discussion, seeing what has happened in other threads recently.
