PIC: 3 Bronx Zoo Lion Cubs Named By Public Vote - 1010WINS.com
Today the Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo and the New York Daily News have announced the results of the public vote on the names of the Zoo’s three African lion cubs.

The female lion cubs were named Nala (“gift” in Swahili) and Adamma (“beautiful child” in Igbo.) The male cub will be known as Shani, or “wonderful” in Swahili.

The nomination process involved more than 300,000 names that were submitted to the WCS’s Bronx Zoo and the New York Daily News. Thousands voted for their favorite of the final five sets of three names.

visit to bronx zoo

- there is a fenced off section off beach in the final exhibit of jungleworld?
- the malayn tiger cubs are on exhibit in the afternoon and the amur's are on exhibit in the morning
- pumpkins in the exhibits off snow leopards, tigers, snakes, polar bear, gorilla, pheasents and leopards

Congo Gorilla Forest is now $5, the Children's Zoo is $4, Butterfly Garden is $3, JungleWorld is $4, plus the monorail, shuttle, theater, camel rides, etc are still individually priced and all a few bucks each. I can perfectly understand the zoo's justification for the rides, but the price for Congo Gorilla Forest (even though the money goes towards conservation) is too high and it was only $3 a couple of years ago...and now the extra charge for JungleWorld is a bit of a joke. What would people think if Omaha started charging a few bucks for Kingdoms of the Night, Desert Dome or Lied Jungle? JungleWorld must be the only tropical rainforest building in America that someone has to pay extra for! The Bronx Zoo is now $16 an adult (very reasonable) or $30 to cover almost all of the "extras". San Diego charges a similar amount, but how long before Omaha begins to charge to see specific exhibit complexes? Where does it end? If someone wishes to see the gorillas, Asian animals, children's zoo and butterfly garden at the Bronx then they might as well fork out $30 (almost double the adult rate) to ensure that they don't have to spend time lining up in order to purchase individual tickets for each exhibit.

I'm not happy about this, but to be fair, I think we need to consider the cost of living difference between NYC/San Diego and Omaha.

The problem we have with this is that for a zoo of its size and stature the Bronx Zoo's hours are terrible. How can you justify all these extra charges when visitors have to rush through things just to see the entire zoo during a given visit. You wanna charge more expand the zoo's hours simple as that!

The New York City cultural institutions (like the zoo) have lost a great part of their state and municipal funding support. Staff have been laid off. Buildings have been closed.

Staying open later will simply worsen the financial problem for the zoo. Very few visitors are coming to the Bronx for the evening.

I am sorry to see these raised fees and especially that the JungleWorld admission is now being charged daily (not only on Wednesdays as in the past). But I have no brilliant suggestions for them to raise money.

Anyone ( besides Anyhius :D ) have any?

Isn't it enough that now they have added Dora and Diego's 4-D Adventure ride?

All true, but some might suggest that some greater percentage of the Society's $500+ million endowment, or perhaps some fragment of the over $1.5 million expended annually to compensate just the top three WCS executives be directed to the Bronx zoo to support operational expenses there.

While I am a huge fan of Jungleworld, it is hard to justify a $4 charge, especially in it's current gharial-less, proboscis monkey-less state.

oh those were the days!

You can't be serious. That would have been just awesome. The exhibit opened in the 1980s right? I went to the Bronx Zoo and I was just blown away by JungleWorld in particular. The amount of fabrication put into representing jungles is just immense. The interpretive displays are really great and I love the sense of setting out on a journey or adventure that the Bronx Zoo creates with all their immersion exhibits. My favorite part was probably how the Malayan Tapir exhibit had also other animals moving about in the trees around it.

I visited the Bronx Zoo just two weeks ago and was blown away by its excellence (better than San Diego) but the charges at CGF and JungleWorld were very annoying. Luckily I visited on a Monday and the place was empty not to mention gorgeous weather. I couldn't imagine waiting in line at each of the exhibits on a scorching hot busy summer day.
