Hi everyone!

I am doing my final student report right now (to get my Bachelor of Science with a main in Ethology and Animal Welfare) and I wonder if any of u out there has any experience in breeding woopeckers in captivity? The birds I am studying is the white-backed woodpecker and I am trying to help sort out what cues lead to a succesfull breeding.

So if there are any woodpecker specialists out there who has any good tips please tell me =)

Thanks heaps
:)

Well i cant help you, but allow me to welcome you to the site. Im sure there are various people who can help you here

Ritza, I assume you know about Nordens Ark in Bohuslän? They take part in a breeding and reintroduction program for the White-backed Woodpecker.

Hi MikeG!

Thanks, yea I do know about Nordens Ark cos that is where im doin my behavioural studies. But since they are the first one, in sweden at least, trying to breed woodpeckers there are still som gaps in the knowledge about how to keep the birds to get them to breed succesfully.

So I just wondered if anyone else out there in the world had som experience in breeding woodpeckers and had any good tips! :) If to keep the woodpecker couple apart or together during the winter season for instance?

I wondered if that was the case! The woodpecker that has been most frequently bred in captivity is a South American species, the White Woodpecker (Melanerpes candidus). Zoos that have bred this species in the past include Rotterdam, Basle and Chester (Chester bred them in the late 1980s and early 1990s). It may be worth contacting these zoos to see if they have kept records of their husbandry techniques.

Dendrocopos minor, Dendrocopos major and Picus viridis are being kept in Netherlands, Belgium and Germany by private aviculturists and of all three species there is a sufficient captive bred population. If you re interested in any breeding reports send me a pm one problem might be that all of them are in Dutch.

Thank u all for the help!

Bongorob: Thanks, it was interesting to see that Milwaukee County Zoo also found the hight of the aviary to be a critical factor.

Using a pie pan for enrichment sounded a bit odd though! =)
