Chester Zoo Asian Elephant Sheba

Very sad , though inevitable news , Sheba has been a fixture of my many visits to Chester over the years . She was probably not there on my first visit , which I reckon was about 48 years ago . I have a vague memory of the old Elephant House from that visit , which I think was near the Tiger enclosure .

I assume Sheba was Chester's longest-living resident and am wondering who can now claim this title ? Is one of the original tuatera still alive ?

The old elephant house stood on the site where the Jubilee square toilets are. I remember seeing Malayan tapirs in there, must have been about 1962. Sheba arrived at Cheser on 12th February 1965.

I'm guessing Chester's oldest resident is the male condor, about 52 I think.

Deepest sympathy and condolences to all those who knew and loved Sheba. Especially to the keepers and staff who worked and lived with her, to the visitors and others who loved her.
It is sad when any much loved animal dies but Elephants, in particular, have such strong and clearly displayed family and group bonds that one cannot help but feel touched by the loss that they also so obviously feel.
My condolences also extend to them.

Rest in peace old girl.

Although I would have loved to see her again in July. At least she can't suffer any more after a rough few years.

I doubt we'll never know, but I would like to think the keepers let the herd say goodbye.

Condolences to the Elephant team, must be vey hard as Sheba would have been there longer than most if not all of the current team. Losing that one constant must be a very hard thing to get used too.

Very sad news end of an era, but with Thi Sithami Sundara and the new baby a new era will begin. And with Maya and Jangoli to bring their exprience the herd will go from strength to strength.

A report and discussion of the recent elephant birth and death within a three week period at the Chester Zoo.
I'd like everyone to know that I did NOT give my permission for my photographs to be used on the ShowMe Elephants website, nor am in any way connected to that site.

Didn't think you would. The photo's from you and chris are the only decent things on their.

The prose is terrible..

I would like to add that I was not asked if the photo could be used and therefore I have NOT given permission.

EDIT: - I have now been asked and have granted permission for the image to be used.

sheba

I understand that this was the case at Paignton last year when Gaye died, Duchess was allowed time with her, but I don't know about any other collections.

We were there on Wednesday but didn't go in the Elephant house.but i think the others only came out in the afternoon.

Who is the Matriarch now?

From what I have seen it appears that Maya has taken over the role - she was always the obvious choice as during Sheba's time as leader she was dominant over all the females except Sheba.

Rest in Peace Sheba

Sheba`s died:eek:??????I saw her a few years ago,was in quite a poor state then compared to the other`s.Just a little warning to Anne the Elephant.......:(
