Payed my first visit today and was absolutely amazed, from the very first glimpse of the Polar Bear as you enter, right the way through to the shell and eggs collection. i saw animals i had never heard of before. The Saiga antelope is now at the top of my list of animals i'd like to see. (Just had a look around, seems Moscow has them.)

Its brilliant museum! especialy as its been refurbished in recent years! did you see the dressed fleas?

Is that what it was, i did look in there and saw little figures, but my eyes aint what they used to be. I've been telling my kids about it, they want to go now, an over 300 mile round trip looks likely next year now.

yes apparently they were all the rage in the late 18th century :D Most of it is Walter Rothschild's personal collection and i recently read a book on his life, it goes into great detail about the skins he was collecting and also his private collection a bit hard going in parts though!

For anybody interested in the Tring Zoolgical Museum, the book:-
Dear Lord Rothschild: Birds, Butterflies and History
written by Walter Rothschild's niece, Miriam Rothschild, is thoroughly recommended.

Thats the exact one!
Thanks Tim

That book has recently been republished under the new title of "Walter Rothschild: the Man, the Museum and the Menagerie." I bought this volume from Amazon believing it to be a different book from "Dear Lord Rothchild" (which I already owned).
