Wow, 15 million?! For most zoos it takes years (sometimes a whole decade) to raise that much money!
The San Diego Zoo received $15 million — the largest donation in the history of the park — but more money is needed to complete a pair of renovation projects, an official said today.
The gift from philanthropist Conrad Prebys gets the ball rolling on the Australian Outback, with more modern exhibits for koalas and other animals from down under, a eucalyptus forest and an educational area, said the zoo’s Yadira Galindo.
The project is due to open in two years, Galindo said.
Africa Rocks will create an “immersive” exhibit that includes a gentle slope to bring zoo-goers up from a canyon and into an area with rock formations for African mammals, reptiles and birds, she said.
Galindo said Africa Rocks is scheduled to be completed by 2016, in time for the zoo’s centennial celebration.
Prebys, who has donated to a number of area organizations, has given the zoo $25 million for new exhibits.
Galindo said the zoo depends on donations and will need more to complete the projects. How much money is still needed has not been determined, she said.

Lots of new babies sounds really good. Anyway, has anyone been in awhile? I was wondering if we could get more construction updates. The new Panda Trek exhibit is supposed to nearing completion soon. Does anyone know how the exhibit is starting to look and when it will be opened?
I went yesterday and in my opinion it doesn't look like it is going to be finished soon. I will be attending a "Suprise Sunrise Stroll" on May 15th, the educators sometimes have inside information. I will do my best to get some answers. Any other questions you want me to ask?
It was originally suggested here on ZooChat that the panda canyon extension would include a new chinese leopard exhibit. But as far as I know the zoo blogs are not mentioning that, so I assume that idea has been scrapped?
Yes, please keep me posted. If they have an anticipated opening date (for chinese leopard) that would be great. Thanks!
