another baboon has been born at the Alma Park Zoo - this is the third female born at the zoo in 3 years - the small (and young) troop seem to be doing really well...

Scooby, the alpha male, appears really gentle, even playing with his older offspring, Layla and Kamilah. The breeding females are a mother/daughter pair from Melbourne, Greetje and Geene. The new baby, born to Geene, was born on March18 and looks to be doing really well.

They seem to be doing really well with Baboons. Do you know where Scooby came from?

Scooby was born in 1999 at Melbourne Zoo - his mum still resides there as far as i know and his dad Dolbus originates from Emmen Zoo - Scooby, Dolbus, and the 2 girls were transferred from Melbourne to Alma Park Zoo in 2004. Dolbus has since been transferred out.

Do you know if all the males at Melbourne are castrated?

If they are castrated, have the males' shoulder manes('capes') fallen out, the same way castrated Lions lose theirs?

On my visit, there were a few males with the impressive manes and bright, bulging rumps. I also saw what I thought was an adolescent (now I believe it is a castrated male) mating with some females.

The leading males (there are two troops inhabiting the same exhibit) definitely still have their manes. The younger males either aren't old enough to have manes, or try haven't grown them.

The exhibit was actually split in two on my visit, a smaller group in the far left end and then the rest of the troop in the larger area.

Alma Park seem to have success breeding baboons (compared to other zoos in Australia) even if in probably the soon to be worst enclosure (the new Melbourne enclosure will push it down, but currently I would say Melbourne's is the worst). I wonder if Perth has plans to do so, or even the Adelaide trio?

Theres been a mix with the adelaide troop lately, with some of the troop going to Auckland and Perth. There are plans to breed them from what I know, and I know that once the Perth Zoo's baboon enclosure has been redone they will definitely breed theirs.

This latest birth to my knowledge is their sixth successful birth since their first birth in 1981.

That is pretty impressive. Do they have plans to upgrade the exhibit? Also, were all of these bred in the same exhibit (have they been in the current exhibit the whole time Alma Park have had them)?

Thanks for your answers.

i am not sure if they have always been in the current site -
Alma Park recieved their first pair Toth (m) and Isis (f) in Dec. 1976 (both were just over 1 year old and born at Perth Zoo)

Another Hamadryas baboon has been born on the 11th of June. In additional news, Pygmy Marmosets have arrived at the zoo.
