Chester Zoo Animals Chester Have not had Sucess With

3.5 were imported to be kept with the original 0.1. The zoo had asked for 5.5, I guess there wern't enough spare males to go around.

2.1 have since died, leaving just a single male. Let's hope he survives.

I'm not sure if the original female is still alive.

No the original female was the 1 female to have died since the juveniles arrived, she was believed to be about 70 to 80 yearsold when she died.

The current tuatara are the most common species punctatus. Are they yetl classed as juveniles? Why is the sex ratio 1.5? Is that conducive to any breeding later on (Chlidonias please reply .... lol)? :)

breeding is probably better with more males (a group situation), but historically most breedings in NZ are from pairs although this is likely due to that just being the way most are kept rather than it being the best method. They have been bred as a group of 4:4 at Otorohanga. Tuatara generally reach sexual maturity around 9-15 years, and are probably full-grown at around 30 or so.

Thanx,

When where the 3.5 group imported?
Any chance they may get 1-2 replacement (adult) males so they can go on to breed?

I do not agree with the last post - pelicans were believed hard to breed some 10-20 years ago, but now it is far better. For example: 7 collections hold at least 1 pelican in my country, 4 of them breed them regularly (and 1 other sporadically).

Chester's pelicans have laid eggs. The tuataras arrived in 1994 and came from Wellington Zoo. They were accompanied by Barbara Blanchard of Wellington Zoo and Ben and Tammy Hippolite, a Maori elder and his wife. Mr Hippolite made a formal presentation of the tuataras to Chester Zoo and later blessed the enclosure in the hope of giving Chester some success in the breeding of tuataras.

I don't know if Chester are trying to obtain more males.
