San Diego Zoo Safari Park Indian rhinos at SDWAP

Hi okapikpr,

I second your opinion/assessment of the situation.

The Indian rhino breeding record at San Diego WAP is rather impressive, however most offspring can now be deemed surplus to the SSP as their individual bloodlines are overrepresented (a similar situation exists in Europe with the Basel bloodline).

I sincerely hope that the introduction of an entirely new unrelated bull from Patna Zoo, India can somehow alter that equation with a designated group of San Diego WAP born females with low/mean kinship values (re pm).

I also see some opportunities here viz a viz San Diego WAP/Basel bloodlines:
1. reintroduction of captive Indian rhinos to Manas NP.
2. sending on 0.1 to Dubbo WPZ (Basel) and 0.1 to Japan (San Diego).

What holds the future for Indian rhino at San Diego WAP?
Will they continue breeding from the 3 older range females Shanti, Goalpara and Jakichu? Is the trend towards phase out of the younger generation sired by Arun (examples, Kua to Dubbo, Goyona and Gari with calf Lali to India and Jeta to Montgomery) in favour of calves sired by the new Patna Zoo, India born bull?

Future is still bright...the challange is to maintain this herd and not allow over-population within the SSP.

Shanti - traded to Fort Worth with their female who hasnt breed. Arun will also be sent back to Ft Worth and breed Shanti again.
Goalpara - is to be surplused, undecided location. Her father is her grandfather and she bred with him and had successful offspring (Godavari). Those genes are well represented.
Jakichu - maintain at SDWAP

As for offspring, SDWAP will be maintaining all of Arun's daughters except Lali and Rani. I is also still too soon to make recs for many of Arun's offspring b/c of their young ages. We'll know in a couple of years once the new male is breeding and the current calves are older.

look seriously, we'll take just about anything. if you have any female indian rhino at all please surplus them our way! :)

A recent move on the front was the introduction of the NY Bronx born female from 2004.

Is the male Arun been moved out soon. The current Fort Worth male Rabha (a second SD-WAP breeding elder) has already left the collection or may have died?

Has the intended swap with Forth Worth (Shanti) concerning their non-breeding and unrepresentated Nepali female (Arati) been effected yet?

What is the plan on Goalpara (India)?
