Just a few questions about Chester;
1)Are they breeding their Komodo Dragons i have heard there is a new male by the name of Trooper is he with Flora?Where and When if possible is Flora's son Ogrod moving to?
2)Does anybody know the Congo Buffalo names?
3)Have the Rock Hyrax come out of Quarintine?
4)Are any of the Black Rhinos pregnant e.g. Kitani or Manyara?Any plans to move Bashira or Asani or keep them as breeding stock?
Thanks in Advance,Becki.

1) Don't know anything on that front. Haven't seen them introduced and Ogrod seems happy where he is.
2) No.
3) No.
4) Don't think there are any pregnancies, and not sure about Bashira and Asani's futures.

I spent a brilliant day today with the bird team. There are young birds everywhere, but highlights include Chester's first hatching of a white-crested turaco in the Tropical Realm, eggs for the Schalow's turaco in the Rainbow Aviary and in the Tsavo Aviary, numerous Pekin robin nests in the Tropical Realm and another Victoria crowned pigeon nest (also Tropical Realm).

The fairy bluebirds in Realm of the Red Ape have a nest but the male has been temporarily removed to prevent him bothering the female, and in the Chinese Aviary the Temminck's tragopan has three chicks. The male has also been temporarily re-homed there too.

Any luck with the Cabot's Tragopans?

Brilliant news - are the Temminck's chicks easily visable by any chance? I will be visiting soon so will be nice to see them :)

They're following the female around, and although they're well-camouflaged and staying at the back of the aviary, if you're quiet and patient you should get a glimpse.

A few other titbits; the hammerkop youngsters (four males) have left the nest and something I may have already mentioned is the addition of a snowy-crowned robin chat to the Tsavo Aviary.

I saw a waldrapp ibis chick on the nest in Europe on the Edge (need to download my photos to double-check the species) but it's not visible unless you're in the enclosure. The roul roul partridge have chicks if you know where to look in the Tropical Realm, and there was a tiny, newly-hatched emerald dove chick in Realm of the Red Ape.

The bird team were excellent, I can't praise them highly enough, and a day with them is fully recommended.

Guess we got lucky, saw them in the back little 'cave' part straight away with some decent views (bar one or two stray leaves). I must say, the chicks are adorable and so glad we saw one :D

I also have a request for everybody, I got a picture today of a blur basically. I believe it MAY be a Midwife toad, but then again it could be a leaf the picture is that bad. Couldn't see it properly, just saw in a little cave-y area with something that could have been anything. It has similar colours and [maybe] shape to a toad, but really can't tell. What are peoples opinions on the liklihood that it is? Thanks all :)

It's a toad

Thanks Rob, feel pretty good about actually seeing one :D - shame it wasn't in a brilliant position but I will keep on looking for these each and every time - the holy grail of elusive animals in my opinion at Chester :p

Warm days at this time of year are the best for toad spotting (but you still have to be lucky :))

Alan

Thans Alan, will certainly keep that in mind :) Sand lizards nearby as well :) - a lovely, quiet area of the zoo with some nice species (when you actually see them!)

Also, another species I believe are elusive are the blue-crowned laughingthrushes in the Chinese aviary, we saw two and got a couple of pics, not easy as they hardly paused between flying back and forth for a second

The whole babbler family are notorious for this sort of thing - they are just too fond of cover and too restless.
