Chester Zoo Sumatran orang utan born!

I would how they work it if they decide to go ahead with the next phase?

I suppose they have just enough room in the new building while the next phase was constructed!

I didnt know it could house that many!!

It would be nice if they could reach that number, though we might have to wait a while

That's why parts of it look rather empty at present....

Martha could still breed at 43, it is possible depending on her fertility.

If they do decide to keep a second species of gibbon i hope they bring in a rarer species unlike the Siamang and Lars

I believe it could be Siamangs that they try next, but other species have been mentioned.

What species have been mentioned?

I sincerely hope for Bornean greys or Javan silvery gibbons. Pileated gibbons would be nice, but I think due to the theme around Indonesia it would not suit the atmosphere to bring in a mainland endangered gibbon taxon.

I think Pileated Gibbons would suit the elephant house very well (say, in the current hornbill aviary...)

With bringing in another Gibbon species, does this mean that the Lars will be moved on or will they be retained as well? Juggling 4 ape species in one exhibit would be tough though...

I doubt the zoo would place gibbons in there anyway. You've got Great Indian Hornbills in the Tropical Realm anyway Hornbill.

Id personally like to see Pileated, Golden cheeked or silvery though the first two are mainland species so maybe not

You`ve named all the species that i`ve heard mentioned.

I was told Javan Silvery gibbons last year, however this was not from a primate keeper.

Javan Silverys would be lovely. Though with Chester you never know untilk they actually arrive

Whether or not they will arrive always depends on availability. If one looks at their populations in Europe all are not exactly in great supply.

I am tipping on 1. Javan silvery gibbons (large numbers at Howletts and a good possibility of new unrelated animals from Ragunan Zoo's Schmutzer Center).

The 2.nd possibility would be Bornean grey and then ... I so, so, so wish that they will work with the Kalaweit rehabilitation center for Bornean grey and agile gibbons on Kalimantan, Indonesia. This center desperately needs cash to stay afloat and holds 55-70 confiscated gibbons (more need to be placed as locals still have this nasty habit of taken in a gibbon in the household). Some can never be released as they have hepatitis .... Sad, sometimes. But most can be re-integrated into a life back in the rainforest.

Another aspect to whether a given species arrives at a zoo is unforeseen developments. F.i. an new bull elephant is expected in Chester, but then an older bull dies in zoo P and the Species Coordinator finds the only genetically suitable candidate would be the bull elephant destined to go to Chester .... Verdict: bull elephant will go to zoo P instead!
