I thought this sounded intriguing in a geeky way! I realise no one is going to travel but if you happen to be nearby...

"Maths in and out of the zoo"
Professor Christopher Budd, Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Bath

Is maths a tame animal, confined to the classroom or university, or is it a wild animal, free to roam in the jungles of the world's problems? My talk will try to answer this question by taking maths on a tour around the zoo. We will discover the maths of fish, penguins and many other exotic creatures. Maths will be used to peer inside the brain of a bee and also to soar with the starlings. I will even show you how maths can help at the gift shop and at the turnstiles to get in. There will be a mix of maths on show. Bring your imagination!

How many different types of math do you Brits have?

well my maths teacher once told me I'd invented a whole new set of rules for calculus so I think the answer could be - as many as we want :D

on a more serious vein - I know the 'magic number' Phi crops up in nature oodles of times - so the curved chambers in a Nautilus shell for example - so I'll admit to embracing my inner geek on this one!

:)

As many as it takes the goverment to bend the figures and tax us more usually.

However we did produce Issac Newton and Stephen Hawking, so we have some pedigree.

In conservation projects and research etc, once the fieldwork has been done and raw data collected, mathematics (particularly statistics) plays a significant role in the outcome of results.

PS- I was going to attend this lecture, but unfortunaletly my dog ate my wallet so I cannot now attend...
