Berlin Zoo Berlin Zoo Bird House / Pheasantry

I will be going to the Berlin Zoo in September. Can anyone send me an up-to-date species list for the Bird House and Pheasantry?

Also, if anyone has an updated list for Vogelpark Walsrode's Nusantara / Paradieshalle / Pheasantry that would be appreciated too. I have one current to October 2010, but I'd like the most current info possible -- I will have limited time and want to make sure I know what to look for.

The Bird House is currently nothing more than a pile of rubble - a picture, taken in April, is attached below. Those species that were within are mostly off show, and will be for the rest of this year at least. The new house should be tremendous. However, the Pheasantry remains open, and the collection here is large, and with the other bird exhibits peppered through the zoo you will still see a large avian selection - although, sorry, I do not have a list.

Don't forget, too, that the Tierpark has a very large, and very impressive, bird collection.

Well that's disappointing! I assume it won't be ready by September. Thanks for the heads-up -- I guess I'll focus more on the Tierpark than the Zoo!

Are there any other zoos with good bird houses relatively (1-2 hours) close to Berlin?

That is one building i would loved to have seen, more species under one roof than most entire collections anywhere.
Are there any links to its reincarnation anywhere?

Do you have any details for the new birdhouse? Layout, species, theme, etc? Would be great to know.

There's a plan, and brief further elucidation, in the 2009 annual report (published in the 2010 edition of Bongo).

The complex will have the rough shape of a four-leaf clover. the central house will have three walk-through exhibits: south-east Asia, Australian bush, African savannah. Each of these areas will have its own run of aviaries as one of the leaves; the fourth 'leaf' will be for some South American aviaries, as well as various parrot aviaries.

THANK YOU for this list!

Hi we are currently in Berlin and will be visiting both Zoo Berlin and Tierpark.. we can give a full list hopefully. It did just look like a big pile of rubble and a big hole today as we walked past... Will let you know! Would you like lists of every bird on show in both zoos??

Both zoos if possible! Thank you so much!

What's the progress on the birdhouse? Is it nearing completion?

Also, can anyone tell me what birds are found in the aviaries between the thars and the swine house. Are these the bird of prey aviaries?

Is the huge hornbill currently off display because of the bird house renovation?

If you want a list for the raptor aviaries, this is what I saw there in September 2011:

1. Red-headed Vulture (Sarcogyps calvus), White-headed Vulture (Trigonoceps occipitalis), Lanner Falcon (Falco biarmicus)

2. Northern Caracara (Caracara cheriway)

3. Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), Hooded Vulture (Necrosyrtes monachus), White-necked Raven (Corvus albicollis)

4. King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa), Harris' Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus)

5. European Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa lapponica)

6. empty, I think African Wood-Owls (Strix woodfordii) were hiding in there

7. Sumatran Eagle-Owl (Bubo sumatranus)

8. empty

9. Nepalese Eagle-Owl (Bubo nipalensis blighi)

10. Spectacled Owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata)

11. Nepalese Eagle-Owl (Bubo nipalensis blighi)

12. Palm-nut Vulture (Gypohierax angolensis)

13. Snowy Owl (Nyctea scandiaca)

14. African Fish-Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer)

15. African Fish-Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer)

16. Abyssinian Ground-Hornbill (Bucorvus abyssinicus)

17. Pied Crow (Corvus albus)

18. African Fish-Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer)

19. Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

20. Hooded Vulture (Neophron percnopterus)

21. Eurasian Griffon (Gyps fulvus), Lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus)

22. Lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus)

23. Southern Ground-Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri)

24. Northern White-faced Owl (Ptilopsis leucotis)

25. American Kestrel (Falco sparverius sparverius)

26. Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia)

Actually I was just wondering if the area between the thars and the pigs is where I can find the raptors, but i really do appreciate the list. Thanks.
(I believe the last red-headed vulture died though)

yes, raptor aviaries between the pig section and the Himalayan tahrs (hadn't seen the spelling 'thar' before but a google search reveals that it also is in use). You probably already know it, but the excellent vulture aviary is in the tierpark, not the zoo. If you also plan on visiting the tierpark, care about separating all the vulture species and have a small pair of binoculars - bring them along.

I don't know when the new bird house will open: Based on recent photos I guess quite soon, probably spring 2013.

Thanks. I'm trying to memorize both the zoo and tierpark before my visit, so I'll reduce the change of missing out on some rare species. I also really hope the birdhouse will be ready when I'll be visiting (2nd week of april) but I will just have to wait and see.

I may have missed it somewhere in between the lines, but does anyone know when is the new bird house in Zoo Berlin due to open again to the public? Thanks.

Last month the zoo were talking of having it open for Whitsun - that is, May 19th. It was looking pretty much ready - just the outside aviaries needing finishing, some internal decoration.... And the birds to arrive.

For those who like a taxonomic house presented without any ersatz "storyline", this will be one of the very best zoo houses in Europe.
