Of coarse the welfare of the animals must come first, and if gravel is the preferred floor covering so be it, for giraffes that are hybrid or pure bred, however why are the giraffes at London kept on sand and as Maguari has stated sand would be considered the preferred floor covering in modern day veterinary practice, perhaps his suggestion of a paddock covered in gravel with part of it sand would be a sensible idea?

There certainly needs to be a hardstand, the difficulty at Twycross is there's nothing but hardstand. That said, it's far from the most pressing issue at Twycross.

No it is not the most pressing issue at Twycross, but to enhance the quality of life for the giraffes would only cost a few thousand pounds, not a few million as in the case of the chimps in the old chimp enclosures, an interesting discussion never the less.

Dont matter what the colour isit still makes an awful noise when the chavs are pushing thier prams around on it!:)
 
Juts need to vent: I've been following Twycross' Twitter feed, and they do a little animal fact of the day. Perfectly good idea, but it does help if the facts are right!

So far, according to Twycross' tweets:

-tuataras are lizards

-sharks can't stop swimming without dying (never seen a captive nurse shark or dogfish then? Just demonstrably untrue - they can ventilate the gills via water currents)

-Striped Hyaenas are the smallest of the hyaena family (though in fairness they did correct this to Aardwolf later in the day)

-today, Common Carp are the ancester of goldfish (Crucian or Prussian Carp, depending on who you ask - certainly not Common, which are a whole different genus)


This is supposed to be a place of zoological and environmental education! Grrr.

Twycross' facebook page has annouced the birth of two snow leopards on the 8th June. Bit early to annouce this in my oppinion but... :s

Well they have done this before so many times,only for something to go wrong lets hope these cubs have the luck of the baby Gorilla and not the others they annouced very early!!

I will be visiting on the 2nd August if anyone would like any photographs of animal species or any particular enclosure please let me know.
 
A baby Vicuna was born on 01/07/11 according to Facebook-three Vicuna babies have been born altogether in the last two weeks(one at Twycross and two at Chester!).
 
A male bonobo arrived from Twycross at Leipzig about 3 weeks ago. I saw hin today, but was not able to take a foto a identify him. Any idea who he is??

I am planning a visit here around the 17th of August... mainly to see the snowleopard cubs... have they been spotted yet? or is it too early?

Last I heard they were still being held off-show,and would be for a few weeks more still,they can be viewed on a video link to the den in Himalaya!

From Twycross' Twitter feed on 7th, in answer to a question about the cubs:

"They're gorgeous aren't they! We're not sure yet when they will be in the main enclosure, its up to mum Irma really, but Himalaya is free to enter and we will update everyone as soon as they're out and about!"

Might be worth keeping an eye on Twycross Zoo (TwycrossZoo) on Twitter for updates.
 
They have put the first proper pics on their facebook page of the mother and one of the cubs looking out of the den so won't be too long before they leave hopefully!

Yes have just seen the picture and it looks like the off-show den and not the one into the main exhibit!!
 
Well thats all my hotels all booked up for my zoo tour this year... so the cubs have about 5 weeks to grow and start getting outside before i arrive!...lol Not bee to twycross for over 2 years...when i was last there the snowleopard enclosure wasnt even built. Excited about going back.
