I'm sorry, but you're mistaken. Giraffe Ridge opened in 2008 with three giraffes: Akilah, Tessa, and Kimba. There were never six giraffes.

you sure about that, there were pics in the zoo on the 4D theater wall with 6 giraffes in it at giraffe ridge, and i even remember there being 6 or 5. i am 150% sure

I'm sorry, but you were correct xD Looking back at some photos from my visit the day after the exhibit opened (I just went and searched through files and files to find them), the exhibit opened with five giraffes! There were three males and two females. However, the two excess males must have left the zoo not too long after the opening of the exhibit as there are only three giraffes in the photos from a visit later on that year/ early 2009 (the ones I was looking while posting the last comment which I thought were from the time the others were taken). Well... that just gives me a reason to organize all of earlier photos on my computer

Has anyone heard anything about the progress of the African Savannah? I know they had expected the hoofstock and baboon exhibits to do completed by 2012, but I don't even know if they're working on it! It looked like they were doing a little bit of construction on the other side of the old parking lot when I was there the other day, but I'm anxoius to see hippos at our zoo again!

Another question - did the zoo ever have African elephants? I thought sure they did when I was a child during the... ahem... mid-80s, but my cousin insists it's always been Asian.

i heard it will open in 2014-2015. and Gimpy was a Pygmy Elephant

I have not heard any news about the the African Savannah in a while. The African Savannah will be opening in phases (Just like the African Savannah in Columbus), and portions of the exhibit will open from now until around 2014. The African Savannah in Columbus and in Cincinnati will be opening around the same time.

@Cinzoo man- Well, Gimpy was a "pygmy" elephant in sense of size not species. Really she was just an African Forest Elephant.

Cincinnati Zoo's last African Elephant, Gretchen, left in 1993 for the Bowmanville Zoo in Canada. Gretchen had been at the Cincinnati Zoo since 1967.

Thanks for the photograph, Kudu! I knew they used to have African elephants there. I wonder if they'll ever bring them back. I would love to see more photographs of the zoo from that time period. I just know I loved going there, but I can't remember what the exhibits really looked like because I was so young at the time.

I'd say that the zoo will not be bringing back Africans That is unless they get rid of their Asians Most zoos choose to only exhibit either Africans or Asians, because A. most zoos do not have enough room to exhibit both species and B. this allows the zoos to focus all of their attention on the husbandry and breeding of that one species. Zoos are also discouraged to exhibit Africans and Asians together in order to prevent the spread of diseases like Elephant Herpes Virus, as well as for other reasons. Kudu- About the african penguins not getting any access to water, what they do is put them over the fence and let them swim in the morning before the little penguins come out

-That's an interesting solution to the lack of a pool in the old Cape Barren Goose enclosure. When you say in the morning, do you mean before the zoo opens or during the first few hours that the zoo is open? No matter, I hope that a pool will be added soon if the African Penguins are permanent residents of the enclosure.

-The Cougars have also been held in off-exhibit areas including the one behind the Children's Zoo. Those two places are the only places that they have been on exhibit.

one of the White tigers was in the Malayan tiger exhibit, is this a sign that they are starting to do something with the Cat Canyon expansion, or is it just a medical check-up for the Malayan tiger, or something else?

Still yet to see the tayra and her baby and the duiker and the okapi

the east african crowned crane was back with the eastern bongos.

saw the chick, shes already standing.

kudu, the salmon cockatoo does rotate with the major mitchells

did the black-footed cats have babies a little while back? i ask because i saw one today that was a little smaller than a full grown one. Speaking of NH, i cant stand when people use flash photography, they should put up a sign saying you cant use it, someone took a flash pick of the Pallas' cat and it spooked her and she jumped in surprise.

and did anyone know that there was a younger alligator snapping turtle in Manatee springs under the bridge where the alligator gar used to live?

and when did the zoo own jaguars? i saw a pic of the so. brazilian ocelot exhibit, with a jaguar in it

-I wonder why they moved the crane back? No matter, the crane looked beautiful in the new flamingo exhibit and was much easier to photograph.
