If you have a full list and can send it, that would be excellent. I will have limited time at each so I'd like to know exactly what to look for and where to find it.

Thanks to everyone else who posted photos/species in this thread as well!

We have spent 5 days in Berlin last week and visited Zoo Berlin and Tierpark twice... we were lucky enough to see the baby rhino at just a few hours old..!! Mum and baby were both out roaming the paddock two days later when we revisited...

i agree the Alfred Brehm house is not ideal for some of the animals in their but they seem to be in no distress or discomfort and actually seemed relaxed laid out in the sun in the outdoor enclosures and the indoor enclosures.

Yes 7 out of the 8 species of pelican are now on show at tierpark and they have no problems with hopping over the fence and wondering the palace gardens and laying accross the paths and they are happy for people to stroke them also if you are calm and quiet and dont charge at them like a child! these animals do not seem to mind living how they do.

All 4 hyenas are on show and i must say the enclosures for them are particularly ample for the amount of animals actually kept in them. I did notice the Aardwolf was not feeling very confident and he only came out into view a couple of times and the others all remained hidden.

I think @Tarsius that if they just kept hoofstock then unless you were interested in them they zoo would not then be visited and the animals are more likely to be sold off to other (maybe smaller and inadequate) collections and homes and and they would probably be mistreated and neglected. None of the animals seem unhappy with where they are and the lemurs in the middle of tierpark if they so wanted could leave their enclosure as i noticed the trees around were connected to theirs and yet they are content and so stay where they are...! also the walkthrough lemur enclosure is fascinating as you can actually experience how they look after each other and the behaviour in small groups..! and yes the takins are rare but some people actually enjoy looking at the animals and the differences between them and just because you do not there is no need to critise or drag down any conversation with your (sometimes wrong and uninformed!!) opinions...!!!

I enjoyed the zoos and i was lucky enough to see some rare species that i may never see again... and all animals were fed well and actually seemed to look forward to keeper interactions!

After reviewing photos there is also arrow-marked babbler in the walk-through aviary in the Alfred Brehm House which is not listed on the signs.

Any one know what's going on at the Alfred Brehm House? There was a lot of building work going on there when we visited the park yesterday.

Also, does anyone know what the layout is for the house? Are there off show dens for the cats within the corridors?

I know what needs to be done to it.......

There has been a great deal of work on the walk-through aviary - one of the nicest parts of the zoo.

As far as I know the plan is to bring forward the inside dens, taking up the space currently used for visitors. I think the small inner aviaries will go too, but I'm not sure whether that will mean that the cat dens will extend even further forwards or not.

In the longer term, the outside enclosures may well be extended too.

Regarding Doms questions..volume 5 of the International Zoo Yearbook [1965] has an article and plan of the Brehm House. It isnt difficult to find. And yes...there are off-show sleeping dens to either side of the internal cages.Love that house, one of my favourites...a proper zoo building.

I was told that the aviaries are going to move further inward just like the cages so they will be kept. But I wonder how it is to be done. The keepers will have a hard time to reach the cages afterwards and it will take more effort to direct natural light into the aviaries as well. But I don't know the actual plans, perhaps they have a good idea to fix these problems. I also really enjoy the thought of larger cages for the cats. Besides being extended towards the visitors area the cages are also going to be combined. At least this is what I was told. I hope all the information is correct and the funding can be raised in a timely manner. It would mean that many cats will have to go, but the remainder would find more than twice the amount of space. Just amazing. Along the remade tropic hall the old building would be an up-to-date attraction again and render better animal housing than many other zoos, wheras it has been a notorious source of complaints so far. I can hardly believe it until it actually starts...

The TP has received 0,1 Aardwolf in exchange of 1,0 from Edinburgh zoo. Now they have 1,1 and hopefully will be breeding them soon. Further, they received a juvenile collared lemure from Plzen and 1,1 Diana monkeys from Edinburgh and Port Lympne respectively.

Interesting. This implies that Edinburgh have now got 2,0 aardwolves, which is a shame as I believe their aardwolf pair had attempted to breed on a number of occasions.

Perhaps they didn't get along too well otherwise or it didn't look like they would breed successfully and they may try to get a different female aardwolf from elsewhere in th UK. But Edinburgh also received a female red panda in return for the aardwolf and diana monkey as far as I am informed. So they might have more luck there.

The TP also needs to wait if the aardwolfes actually breed successfully. The TP now has seven forms of lemures and Berlin has eleven! This is just awesome as most species in the TP even breed regularly and others occasionally. Only mongoz and collared lemures (obviously) havn't bred yet.

The female aardwolf came from RSCC! Edinburghs pair are still there! Thus leaving the European population of this sub species at;

Berlin tierpark 1.1
Edinburgh 1.1
Tayto 1.1
Hamerton 1.1 ( to be confirmed ?)
RSCC 2.1
