With all the rioting recently in London, I have been hearing reports of people breaking into London Zoo and releasing Penguins and more worringly one of the Sumatran Tigers! Is this true?

The Internet is awash with rumours. Unless ZSL themselves or a (reasonably) reputable news source (say the BBC or C4, or a broadsheet - Guardian, Indie etc) confirm it I wouldn't worry.

If it's on Twitter/Facebook it's probably just scaremongering. There's a rumour being spread that Birmingham Children's Hospital was attacked that is also entirely untrue.

Do you have any reliable news links? I've heard this myself as a rumour (well, only the tiger) but can't find anything to confirm whether this is true or just scaremongering.

If it isn't on a reputable news site within, say, 30min of you reading it, you have your answer.

I didn't ask a stupid question, I heard reports and I asked if they were true. The photo has now been deleted and reported apparntley, I apologise for the inconvience.

Seriously though, there is rioting nearby, so I certainly hope they don't target the zoo.

I'm in Hackney, but in what seems to be a pretty safe spot!

I hope everyone in London is safe and well this morning.

Would a Zoo the size of ZSL have some sort of emergency plan in place for something like civil unrest? Jings, the things zoo owners/managers have to think of!

Yes, people need to be careful at relaying Twitter posts that were clearly not real. Those posting the Italian tiger escape on Twitter as an incident at ZSL would have been sought out by the police had their Tweets triggered the violence moving on to the zoo.

As it goes, despite the rubbish being pumped out by the BBC et al, young, poor people aren't stupid, there's nothing really to be gained for them by breaking into ZSL. The targets really were mainly the chain stores in terms of looting, though there were some exceptions.

The general public were mostly safe (there were a lot of 'gawkers'), only when people were stupid enough to try and film or photograph the violence were they attacked.

ZSL has 24hour security, and CCTV, the days of Banksy breaking in and decorating the Tecton penguin pool are likely over. That said, the police were very stretched last night, and there are many, many, accounts of them standing by as people loot shops, so who knows.

I'd say it was very unlikely- ZSL being in Regents Park far removed from the main areas of trouble. Rioters would have to travel some distance to deliberately target it, unlike most random violence which occurs in the immediate area where its all kicking off.

From the BBC News live feed (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14449675):

1245: BBC Monitoring: Russian TV channel Rossiya 24 says parts of London resembled a "battlefield". Citing Twitter, the Rossiya 24 correspondent claims animals had been released from London Zoo and lions and tigers could now be heard roaring on the streets. This is wearily contradicted by the Zoo's press officer. "It's been very quiet," she tells us.

'Wearily' suggests they've had just a few enquiries of this nature!

I am wondering if the UK has a plan in place for the riots of this scale!

I think what happens later today might answer that question . All absolutely shocking , very sorry for anybody caught up in it .

My son , who works in an office near to the centre of Wimbledon , phoned earlier . The police had advised them to close and send everyone home , seems like they have shut down Wimbledon in an attempt to avoid trouble .
