Twycross Zoo My Twycross Zoo visit 02 Agust 2011

Fantastic! Great to see them using the pool, hopefully I'll be luckier in the future.

Yes, fine photographs of the elephants enjoying themselves in their outdoor pool, encouraging to see how far elephant's living conditions have improved over the years, this is far removed from the days when they stood at the moat all day taking tit bits from the visitors. Who has the best elephant facilities in the U.K., Chester, Whipsnade, Twycross?, I would say they are all good but in different ways.

Out of the three? Id say Whipsnade is the best, followed by Twycross then Chester, but all off them have their faults.

Let's not forget Colchester which has a water feature and spacious paddocks for the herd and the bull.

So the best exhibit in the country is the one where they have supervisied access to a grass paddock in case they destroy the grass!!For me Twycross would be behind not just Chester and Whipsnade, but also behind Blair Drummond,Howletts and Colchester but thats just what I think is the best, nothing you can say will change my view on this so we will have to agree to disagree!!

Considering I started this thread I think I should just pass a little comment on the elephant enclosure debate going on here.
I feel in the UK we have just adaquate enclosures for the elephants as ALL the enclosures have thier own little faults in one way or another
I along with many other people I feel Twycross is an adaquate enclosure for the herd they have in the collection as is the enclosure they provide for the herd at Chester.
To say a collections enclosure is better because it can hold a male is really clutching at straws (or maybe trunks)

EDIT - Will be visiting Chester 27th August so will write an visiti reported the following week

I dislike intensely the Colchester elephant paddocks, mainly for the low-lying electric wire which I find unnecessarily placed.

Blair Drummond and Howletts both have fairly basic indoor accommodation, I really think Twycross has much better indoor facilities for its elephants. If you visit Howletts at 3pm on a winters day, and you realise how early the elephants are shut in for much of the year, indoor housing suddenly becomes important.

I did say out of the three

But anyway, argeed..or disagreed ;)

On Twycross's facebook page today a incident involving Josie the chimpanzee she tried to escape but only got into the kitchen, maybe she was in there to pick up supplies

Chimpanzee Press Release

An incident involving a chimpanzee took place at Twycross Zoo today at around 3pm. Josie the chimp was always contained, however she had made her way into the back kitchen area within the chimpanzee building.

The team at Twycross Zoo does regular drills so we are well equipped to cope with any emergency that arises. We followed our emergency protocols and everything went according to plan, so Josie was safely back in her enclosure within 40 minutes, where she is now recovering from her adventure.

We would like to thank all of our visitors, who cooperated fully during this incident. We would like to stress that Josie was always contained, however Twycross Zoo pride themselves on taking great care of both our visitors and animals and therefore handled the situation with the utmost diligence.

Chimps and kitchens! Anyone would think they liked their grub :)

Glad she's safely back in, she's one of my favourites. She was the chimp Molly wrote about escaping in her book too. Wonder if she's been planning it all these years? If she was an orang I'd have no doubt she had!!

Perhaps Josie was trying to make her way to the offices at Norton Grange to try and find out when work is going to start on the new chimp house for herself and her friends,:)
