Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden News From the Cincinnati Zoo 2011 #2

Sumatran Rhino News.

Have any planned developments to breed the Sumatran Rhinos again been made public at all recently? In particular for the zoobred female
'Suci' which must surely be sexually mature(or very close to it) by now?

News on the Sumatran rhinos both in Cincinnati Zoo & Way Kambas in Sumatra seems hard to come by at present.

she is about 7 years old and they cant breed, because: 1: they cant use AI and 2: the other rhino is her father

Why can't they use AI on Suci?

its very dangerous and risky to use it on Rhinos. Emi i think had around 4 failed attempts using AI, and take the baby Indian rhino in October for example, died 12 hours later.

So they can use AI on Suci, it just isn't successful yet.

It may be wise not to post things on here about the zoo that are not necessarily true. Especially since you are not completely involved with the zoo. I think it may be up to the Cincinnati Zoo if AI is an option for Suci or not.

Wow geez sorry! Did i say it was my option if they should use AI on her, hmm dont think so. Im just stating what i have heard from people on here. And im also stating my opinion that i think they shouldnt use it on her, its way too risky. Yet i do think it is good idea just to try because there is no other option at the moment.

You did claim that the Cincinnati Zoo couldnt breed Suci.

And unless you work at the Cincinnati Zoo or are close to someone that does work there, you shouldn't post statements like that on this forum. Even if you did have access to such information - it too wouldn't be wise to post such information without permission. That kind of information could hurt the zoo if other people involved with Sumatran Rhinos (i.e. those in Asia) took this information that you posted as fact.

This is the environment that the internet creates. And sometimes people like you make it difficult to learn about actual zoo news and information.

In the future, it may be best to include some careful wording, such as: "In my opinion, I dont think the Cincinnati Zoo could/should breed Suci because...". Otherwise your statements may come across as fact to others that do not understand your background or how you came to your conclusions.

Your taking this way to seriously. i was stating my opinion, and yes at the moment they cant breed Suci the proper way at the moment

I am infact very close to someone i know who works there. How do you think i found out about the Noctural House and the Komodo Dragon exhibit, and what year the African Savannah was opening and what the next phase is? i know the exhibit manager. Though i wont see her this year again, sadly, because i am done volunteering.

Well, I believe this "heated discussion", shall we say, marks no better time than the present to start a new thread for Cincinnati Zoo news! All new happenings shall be posted about in the new thread :)

News From the Cincinnati Zoo #2

The previous thread was far too long, so I took the initiative to create a new thread! All new information on the Cincinnati Zoo's latest happenings shall be posted here.

I'll kick off the new topic with wonderful news, the zoo's three year-old female Okapi, Kuvua, is pregnant!

Here's a video about Kuvua and Okapis in general:
On a side note, isn't it wonderful how the zoo's director, Thane Maynard, calls Okapis "antelope" at the beginning of the video? He does say that they are relatives of Giraffes later on in the video, but still.

The zoo has also recently experienced the hatching of several Pigeon Guillemot chicks.

Video:

Two Greater Flamingo chicks recently hatched at the zoo. They will be used in the zoo's outreach program:

I feel like the zoo is doing better than theyve ever have, i am so happy with the way things are going!

Thayne also states that they are endangered, they are Near Threatened/Least Concern

I also saw what you wrote on the Fb page, the exact same thing on here

Again out of curiosity what animals did we have during the Adventure Down Under attraction besides, Laughing Kookaburras, Queensland Koalas, and Bennett's Wallabies?

Things are looking up at the zoo :) There have been so many improvements and renovations made over the past few years. It's taken time, but the zoo is certainly improving and making changes for the better.

From what I remember there were Laughing Kookaburras, Queensland Koalas, Bennett's Wallabies, Little Blue Penguins, Cape Barren Geese, an Emu, Western Grey Kangaroos, a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, and there several small aquariums and terrariums in the nursery. That summer was also when the Lorikeet Landing aviary opened.

If you were wondering, here is where all of the animals were held during that summer. The kookaburras were in the Crowned Lemur exhibit which is where the playground is now, the koalas were in nursery enclosures now held by the various outreach animals. the wallabies and kangaroos were in the Jacob Sheep, Dexter Cattle, and Nigerian Dwarf Goat enclosures, the penguins were where they are now, the geese were in the present African Penguin enclosure (the geese lived there up until just recently), the Emu was in the Vietnamese Pot-bellied Pig enclosure which is part of what is currently the Nigerian Dwarf Goat enclosure, the cockatoo was on the perch in the current armadillo enclosure, and the aquariums and terrariums were in the nursery building.

Wow thanks a lot again, know idea we had kangaroos back their, i miss that we have to have something like that again, but keep it permanent this time.

And i believe the wallabies were in the Dexter cattle exhibit?
