Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo News 2011

According to the park's facebook page there are 2 Toco toucan chicks - a pretty good piece of news since I don't believe toucans are the easiest things in the world to breed?

They've emerged from the nestbox in the last week or so - one more eagerly than the other.

More good news - two Red River Hoglets are out and about. Pablo and Pumbaa haven't had much success up till now.

I think its due somehow to lowered stress, caused by the increase in the group size with the new females- for some reason this female was unable to rear her young in a 'pair' situation(even with the male removed when she had babies) but she seems to have proved she can now. Most groups of these Hogs do start with breeding from just a single pair, so this situation(if I'm correct with this hypothesis;)) isn't typical.

That will be a complete waste of bandwidth. Given the Lions move twice a day. Once to leave the house, the second to go back in at night. Of all the enclosures to place a camera, they decided to use the most pointless in the zoo.

I think they need to read what they publish before they put it on the website The Tigers do not have a web cam and have not had one for some considerable time. Anyone recognise the Lion picture?

Paignton have had babies with Tigers, Black Rhinos and recently Meerkats but as a lot of people have said and I agree that I doubt the Lions will breed.

Why do people think that? Have they been there a while now? (I don't know anything about them I'm just curious).

I think 2003 was the last time Paignton had any Lion cubs. There haven't been any signs of breeding since then. It would be lovely to have new arrivals.

Although it would also be rather sad to see the lazy buggers they have now moved on. The one thing you can be sure of at Paignton Zoo is the lions. They'll be laying down together doing nothing.

Vets and keepers lose battle to save sick lion cub
Thursday, August 18, 2011

VETS and keepers at Paignton Zoo have lost their battle to save a sick lion cub.

The rare female Asiatic cub was born in June and had been cared for in a secluded den by its mother since then.

A zoo spokesman confirmed today that the cub had been put down.

Paignton Zoo Director of Operations and Curator of Mammals Neil Bemment said “The cub was found to have spinal defects that became apparent as it grew.

"We had to do what was right for her. This is a great sadness for us and a real setback for the species, which is listed as endangered.”

Keepers realised that the cub was unwell as it became more mobile.

Mr Bemment added: “We noticed an apparent curving of the spine and then lameness.

"Our in-house vet team intervened right away. We carried out a full health check and took x-rays – that’s when we identified the curvature of spine.”

There will be a post-mortem examination but the results will take some weeks to come through.

Male Mwamba came from Twycross Zoo in the Midlands, where he was born on 13th February 2004. He arrived at Paignton Zoo in August 2006. Indu was born at Paignton Zoo in October 2003.

This had been their first success as parents after several failed attempts.

Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) are threatened by hunting and habitat destruction. Fewer than 300 survive in the wild in the Gir National Park and Lion Sanctuary in India.

I did not expect this, I feel stupid now! it's unfortunate that they've lost the cub but isn't it common for first time mothers to loose cub(s)?
