Knowsley Safari Park Knowsley Safari Park News 2011

Do you know where he came from?

He is 8 years old, from Boras - Sweden, name is Harrant (sp) – and yes he is to be our breeding male, he was previously in a mixed exhibit with Giraffe and Elephant so it’s a nice change for him to spend time with the females here at Knowsley.

Cape buffalo cows

So a nice range of ages - hope this helps!

Thankyou. So the oldest is 21. I was just wondering what the upper limit for breeding might be in a Bovid species like this. Presumably the younger ones can breed anyway?

24 is the recommended maximum age for first time breeding. And after they calve, they can continue breeding until mid-late forties.

Elephants are indeed not bovids though.... But yes presumably all of the cows have breeding potential :).

I think they may be discussing Cape buffalo... ;)

How does it looks with breeding elephants in Knowsley? Are there any news?
A new male because Nissim doesn't breed?

One of the issues with young Nissim was that he was finding it hard to Dominate the Cows in the herd and if he can't do that then breeding would be difficult if not impossible. There is nothing wrong with him as a Bull so moving him to a new herd with the chance to dominate them and moving a new Bull in should help solve issues with both of the herds involved?
So I would say that thee intention and desire to breed African Ellies at Knowsley was certainly strong.

This is a common problem in Zoos with several of the more advanced species such as Elephants and Gorillas, where a young male is brought in to breed with adult females and is unable to dominate them, preventing mating. Sometimes the problem persists even after the male has reached adulthood as psychologically he's been 'rejected' by the females or still remains subordinate. It is rather unnatural and largely a product of captivity, as in the wild only fully adult males are powerful enough to hold harems or herds etc. and so normally do the mating. Its a similar situation to where young animals brought up together develop a 'sibling' relationship and show lack of interest in mating.

Knowsley have 7 african elephants in their current herd. 1 male and 6 females.

They have had 2 succesful births and 1 stillbirth and 1 was killed.

The 2 calves are now 4 years old and the other mature females all originally came from the wild via Windsor.

Do you know how one of the calves was Killed ??

One was killed the same day it was born by its mother about 3 or 3.5 years ago. I can't tell you if it was accidental or whether she 'freaked out' at the sight of the baby, but unfortunatly one did die then.

A female roan antelope has been born. Unfortunatly she is being hand reared. Apparently all 3 female roan antelope were pregnant on arrival at the park so there could be 2 more births soon!

Blesboks have been their for at least 4 weeks, looking good too!!

Also a second baby Roan has been born within last 48 hours, I was lucky enough to see it yesterday pm, seems to be OK, saw it feeding and walking about, so all good at this stage.

The one being hand reared I believe had to be taken in doors about 2 weeks ago as it was born (bad luck here) on the coldest day we have had in this area so far this Autumn/Winter and would not have survived otherwise, so someone has their hands full raising a baby Roan :). For those who like animal names for their records etc, the first born baby I believe is called Pip...

Just looking on some of the park's fans photos and it's really interesting to see a photo of Nissim mating with one of the females (Elephants).
