Not really big news but some news to start of Whipsnade in 2011..
The tiny wallaby named Pip was abandoned by her mother and so is being hand-reared by Alex, who is using her rucksack as a makeshift pouch for the little marsupial.

Alex, 29, who works on the farm section and with the sealions, keeps Pip with her during the day at all times, just as her real mum might do and also has to make sure she is fed – every four hours.

The seven-month-old joey will be looked after by Alex for the next few months. After that, she will live on the zoo’s Children’s Farm, where visitors will be able to see her hopping around with the other free roamers.

Euan the young Asian Elephant bull born to Azizah six years ago moved to a zoo in Sevilla just over a week ago.

Personally I think six is rather too young for males to be seperated from mother and herd mates. I know it is done quite frequently in zoos, presumably because its easier to handle and move a smaller animal, but in the wild they would stay several years longer in their natal groups.

I would of hoped he'd of gone to Twycross he's not that big(as yet!)but he could become their breeding bull theirs plenty of opportunitys to build a bull pen-apart from that their is a baby due in 2012 to Tonzi (i think).

ISIS now list Whipsnade as holding 4.7 Asiatic Elephants(elephas maximus),is the just out of date or have two new bulls have arrived

could they be calves that have just been moved from the 'born in the last 6 months' column to the male column

ISIS may be wrong there as the only males at Whipsnade are George and his father Emmet as previously stated Euan the young bull(older than George)has left for a batchelor herd it may well be ISIS have Euan,Emmett and George but I am unaware of a new birth or bull arriving.

maybe its just a ghost bull :D i get the impression that the ISIS database thats open to the public is far from perfect but i guess you never know. Wasn't there talk of Emmett being a possible carrier of the herpes virus, maybe they are looking to replace him...i doubt it though

When I visited Whipsnade in December I spoke to a voultneer and he said Emmett was NOT a Herpus Virus carrier that was all speculation,There looking at moving him in 2-4 years as he has already bred with the females enough times even though some of the young did die but he still has 3 healthy offspring(Donna,George and Euan)and another on the way as Azizah is due in 2012.

The four males listed on ISIS are probably Emmett, Euan, Donaldson and George, even though Donaldson died and Euan has recently left.

ISIS seem very slow in making accurate updates on occassion.

Will be the first Nile/common hippo birth there since Lola herself. With 'Hoovie' as the father, the calf will be directly descended from Whipsnade's 1950's breeding pair 'Henry' & 'Belinda'. Hope all goes well- there's still a high percentage of neonatal loss in Zoo Hippos.
