The zoo has annouced via facebook the birth of at least one Vietnamese leaf turtle.
While I appreciate the stud book recommendations are to be adhered to for the benefit of the species, especially for an animal as rare as the Asiatic lion, I must admit I am not completely comfortable in animals which have lived together for years and bonded together suddenly being split up, they must be completely bewildered wondering what has happened, I would therefore think that this is causing stress to the animals concerned, necessary or unnecessary which ever way you want to look at it, so therefore is animal welfare being compromised in this case?
I appreciate the sentiment but Asha & Iblis had actually only been together about a year as he moved in when Asoka moved to Rome. Also in the wild Male lions would roam and find new prides as they mature so that 'natural' instinct is to be considered too I suppose.
The Bears are indeed separated at the moment for the mangement of the 2 animals.Does anyone know why they have but a barrier up in the Speckled bear/Coati enclosure?
I hope they are not having problems with the Bears again.
