Today gorilla "Ukiwa" (born at Wilhelma Stuttgart on April 9th, 1983) gave birth to her first offspring, unfortunately the baby was a stillbirth.
A second female, "Grace" (born at Dublin Zoo on November 28th, 1992), is still pregnant.
A zoo in Germany can now enjoy not only one but two new offspring amongst the herd of African elephants.
In the space of only four days, elephant babies 'Uli' and 'Shamu' were born at the zoo in German town Wuppertal.
While the birth of 'Uli' went relatively smooth, there were complication with 'Shawu'. The birth lasted many hours and only after the veterinarian administered a contraction enhancing aid. It was watched by the the zoo keepers very closely.
'One does always worry if the birth doesn't proceed as quickly, it could be a huge problem since the option of midwifery are extremely limited,' said zoo director Ulrich Schuerer.
He said the the baby is doing fine now but it is still too weak to drink for himself. Therefore 'Shamu' has to be bottle-fed.
But the little one shows no signs of weakness otherwise. He loves to romp around with little 'Uli'. The little elephant bulls don't know yet that sooner or later they'll have to leave the place of their birth.
'The female elephant babies remain with the mothers and the male elephant calf will have to migrate when they are about seven years old,' explains Schuerer. 'Then they will also chased away from the herd. And we must then give them to other zoos.'
it will house an okapi being imported from London zoo in September, which animal, i don't know.
What a wonderful news. I visited the zoo on Sunday and it's a pity that there bonobos and chimpanzees have to live in such small and adequate indoor enclosures. Do you know when the zoo will start to build the bonobo enclosure? And what about chimpanzees? Will they get a new enclosure? Or will they age and die in the tiny indoor enclosure?Bonobo twins born August 13th to "Birogu" and "Eja"!!!!!!
Probably the male calf that was born there?
Thank you. I've read here that the gorilla female grace was pregnant, did she give birth? The zoo plans to built a small outdoor enclosure for the bonobo troop in 2012 (about 200m²). The chimpanzee male will die in the tiny indoor enclosure, the female is going to go back to Münster after his death (he is 43 years old). The chimpanzee will nit get a new enclosure.
Why? Is this a case of bad management from the zoo? Or do blue penguins die so easily? The bigger part of the fairy blue penguins, imported from Taronga Zoo, unfortunately died.
"Grace" had a stillbirth....
The new okapi enclosure opened a week ago. It houses Rab(born in London in 2009).
They died from a bacterial infection, a similar way the fairy blue penguins from Cologne and Bristol died at Wuppertal Zoo two years ago.
Only sever or eight penguins are still alive. In my opinion that is a kind of bad management.
