Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2011 #2

Okanda, Oumbie, Ozala... Assante, Boulas... What species of animal are these? Presumably some are gorillas, given that one house was closed on Friday?

Well done, my first post on here to share some information and I forgot to mention they were all gorillas.

SMR your sarcasm does you proud and I'm out of here.

I've no idea how anyone could infer sarcasm from a straightforward question, but thank you to Javan Rhino, and latterly justint777 for the information.

For those of us who aren't familiar with a particular zoo's animals, referring to them only by 'pet' names does make learning more about the place far more difficult.

I'm sorry, I see no way in which SMR's post was sarcastic . He simply asked which species you were talking about as he wasn't properly familiar with the names. He thought they may have been gorillas, but asked if anybody could confirm they were.

Thank you for the information, it's always nice to see new members come in and it's even nicer when they help out, contribute and grow into valued members. Your first post was very informative (it's easy to forget that others may not know the names of certain animals, I'm very guilty of it). With your first post, you showed promise to becoming a good and valued member :)

Thanks for letting us know that Asante has moved back in with Ozola and Oumbie, this information is much appreciated by myself as I am sure it is to others who are fond of the Twycross gorillas, keep on posting and take no notice of clever dicks,

'Clever dicks'? Why should everyone know Twycross' gorillas by name?

No-one has been a 'clever dick'; it has just been pointed out that it is worth stating what species the names refer to. I don't think that's unreasonable.

Welcome Justin; please do continue to contribute. Just bear in mind that not everyone knows all the animals' names. :)

Should that not read clever or dick instead? :D

Enuf said, let's get back to basics.

Any chance soon that a third gorilla female is introduced to male Oumbie soon? Other developments (the Carnivore Forest ...)?

Hi Justin. Welcome to Zoochat and please continue contributing.

I often find the little 'title' box on the reply page is a usefool tool, though its very little used generally. putting 'Gorillas' in there would have prevented any critisism of your original post by people unfamiliar with their studbook names.;)

She hadn't looked well for a while. It's very sad news. She was a proper character and a real favourite of mine.

Sad news, which will have a serious knock on effect to Twycross long and short term plans for keeping Gorilla's.

Bongo one of the gorillas has died after a short illness.

Sad but 'Bongo' was a good age. She was the 4th oldest female in the UK, after the three eldest females at Howletts, and would have been born in 1965 probably, the same year she arrived at the Zoo as she was a very young baby on her arrival.

With 'Joe' she was one of Twycross & Molly Badham's first pair of Gorillas -though I think they may have arrived a few months apart. So, like Joe, Bongo was one of the best known and original animals at the Zoo.

In its infancy I believe Twycross had a tea room/snack bar situated near to Norton Grange, One morning the member of staff who ran it was behind the counter getting things ready for opening when there was a rattle at the doors, which were locked until opening time, without looking up to see who was trying to get in the tea bar man informed the potential customer that he did not open until 10 o' clock, the rattling at the door however persisted,"I told you, I do not open until 10 o'clock repeated the tea bar man, rattle, rattle again at the doors, he looked up and to his astonishment it wasn't an impatient customer at the door, it was Bongo trying to get in, the great lady herself was informed and she was later taken back to her quarters, lead hand in hand I was told, it was a pleasure visiting Bongo and also her fellow co star Joe, just a pity that they never got it together and had babies of their own.

Joe and Bongo were both handraised/humanised in their early years and brought up living together- a double whammy against them ever breeding together.

My first memory of Joe and Bongo - and first visit to Twycross - was about 1970 . My folks were taking me up to Trent Poly , Nottingham , from Swansea , and I persuaded them to call in at the Zoo .

All Twycross apes were then housed in the 'Green Mile' run , and the outdoor enclosures were then very much smaller . Joe and Bongo were still juveniles . Whilst watching them , Joe ran up and bashed the glass , we all jumped , this memory is still shared in the family !

I remember them in there too, alongside the two pairs of Orangutans- Jod & Alex(Bornean) and Toby & Trudie(Sumatran) plus assorted chimps. As you said, the outsides were much smaller than now.

I have a photo of Joe(my very first of him) in those cages. Also have the old postcard of Joe & Bongo as youngsters and they are wearing dog collars. Possibly they were taken out for walks on leads?
