Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2011 #2

I don't know if it has been mentioned but the snow leopards are all together including Suou the father.

I was chatting to one of the keepers last weekend whilst watching the cubs playing and she mentioned that they would be put together in the outer enclosure soon, the male has had plenty of 'through the bars' contact with the cubs in the off show area as they have been growing so it won't be a shock to him that suddenly there are two tearaways sharing the den with him and his mate - can you imagine that - ooo the chaos! :)

I remember them in there too, alongside the two pairs of Orangutans- Jod & Alex(Bornean) and Toby & Trudie(Sumatran) plus assorted chimps. As you said, the outsides were much smaller than now.QUOTE]
That is quite a thought! They must have been tiny.

They were roughly square in shape if I remember rightly. I think they are about twice their original depth now, maybe even more than that.

"Two of our chimpanzees, Tojo and Jambo, have been moved into the bottom chimp house, with Ricky’s group. At the moment they are housed in one side of the house and over the next few weeks they will be slowly integrated into Ricky’s group. This is the first of a few chimp transfers we will be doing to integrate our chimps into larger groups."

Hopefully this will be the start of moving the chimps out of "the green mile".

Excellent news!

This is very much part of a plan to empty the area around the Green Mile of animals.

Does this mean all of the remaining Chimps in that area will now move in a relatively short space of time?
I'm not sure on the time scale but the recent Gorilla death could have altered, how quickly things could move with regards to changes within the zoo,as long as they have the money to do it.

Tojo and Jambo are now in the old gorilla house with Ricky's group, they moved in on Monday and at the moment are separate from the main group. It is hoped in the near future that all the chimps currently living on the green mile and also Danny and Tommy will be re housed and integrated with the two groups that currently reside in the old gorilla house and also the chimp complex situated in another part of the zoo, it is hoped that this will be completed by Christmas this year.I was pleased to hear this today, however I was also saddened to hear that since my last visit both Becky and Mkundi have died, neither, I think were a great age, also I did notice that Flyn did not appear to be in the peak of condition, hope all goes well for this integration programme, the two chimp houses concerned are not brand new state of the art buildings but surely are a great improvement for the green mile chimps,

Is the old gorilla house the one next to the gorilla outpost cafe? and the second chimp complex where the green mile chimps will be integrated is the one next to the penguins? Are Danny and Tommy in the small chimp house next to the maiin path from the entry to the giraffe house?

Sounds like a great project, but I wonder if there is enough space in the existing enclosures to provide space for that many more animals. The inside areas already seemed cramped without the new additions. And adult male chimps are not exactly peaceful and easygoing with each other.

The old Gorilla house is near Norton Grange and the old pets corner,Malayan Tapir enclosure and not far from the Green Mile.

We paid our first visit yesterday... Noticed that the Enclosure marked on the map as a chimpanzee enclosure by the camels/gorilla cafe was undergoing maintenance... They were replacing glass on the exterior of the enclosure.

This is a big step forward but can anyone list the Chimps which are still in those old cages, e.g. names/sex/age and current groupings?

My stepsons are called Daniel and Thomas, so Danny and Tommy are special animals for us. I don't know why they come to be sharing their own (rather cramped) bachelor pad; can anyone enlighten me?

Danny and Tommy were hand reared chimps, Danny being the last chimp that Miss Badham raised they have lived together since being babies. Their enclosure, however has not always been a bachelor pad, for a while Mkundi, a chocolate female lived there resulting in the birth of Honey, a baby chocolate chimp. Tragically Honey died in 2006, only months old after falling on the floor of the old gorilla house and cracking her head, also her mother Mkundi has also recently died, I would think she was only a teenager, I do not know yet what she died of.

Sorry, I have tried to name and list them all but I cannot guarantee that my list is accurate, i.e. approximate ages, who lives with who, I can start the list, however with the three chimps that live in the first enclosure as you face the outside dens, Benjie(my favourite), Rosie and their baby, Tuli.

Tuli is Mekwundi's baby not Rosies. I think they put Rosie in their to take over the role of mum when Mekwundi died.
