Thanks for listing them all as they are currently housed. So it looks like there are eleven more Chimps to be integrated into the other two groups eventually, if they are proposing to move all of them.

I still don't understand zoogiraffe's cryptic comment about the gorilla's death - are they going to put them ALL together or move two on (urgently to YWP ;) ) freeing up an enclosure, otherwise I don't understand how Bongo's death could be so significant.

Bongo was going to stop with Boulas last I heard, and all the rest would be together in one exhibit, the question is what they do with Boulas now,it also may alter the order in which they change the Great Ape exhibits in the zoo,and possibly it could also alter some planned new build primate exhibits,as they may save yet more money by just not building them now!!

I wonder what happened to the plans for the new Molly Badham Chimpanzee Center?, perhaps the same as the proposed new Asian lion/dhole exhibit, i.e. steak and kidney wrapped in a circular piece of pastry high up in the air.

I think we should keep an eye on the local councils planning website, just to see if any plans get put forward, because if what I have been hearing from Twycross is true some form of planning application should be going in anytime soon!Assuming they have the money to build it.

There is a model for the new cats exhibit now open next to the elephants. It looks very impressive.

I suppose the chimp exhibit has to go at the pace the chimps allow, the quicker they mix the quicker they can get started.

Right so they have submitted the plans for the temporary Gorilla House that will house the breeding group of Gorillas. They don't seem to have submitted the much needed Lion,Hyena and Dhole exhibit plans yet.

If it's an overflow for Apes starting out as a temp Gorilla House, I assume it's in preparation for the top-left corner of the zoo being redeveloped for Apes, starting with the Chimpanzee Centre? If this gets built in parallel with the Kuno exhibit and then they move on to the Apes it'll take them a long way forward, especially as the plans show the kind of Primate exhibit we all want to see at Twycross. I wish I could access the full Masterplan, I bet it's actually pretty impressive.

I wasn't expecting this..:confused:. I can't open the plan right now so where is this going to be sited?

What will happen to the two existing Gorilla Houses?

I thought the new chimpanzee complex was far more of a priority than more Gorilla accomodation but it appears that long term plans include more substantial changes. Very confused.:confused:

On the site currently occupied by the two 'ape nursery' blocks near the meerkats (the chimp one and the one currently used as an aviary).

Not as impressive as the plan for MY zoo, all I need's that record Euro Millions win and I'm there. :D

i.e. masterplans are always impressive, Dudley have done loads of great ones. Given even the mighty Chester had to backtrack, London's Biota is on ice (or scrapped?) and Bristol's NWP is seemingly the same, it's only when I know funds are in place and ground's been broke that I can get very excited.

I believe the official stance is that Biota is scrapped, NWP is on ice.

I quite like the look of this, although I don't think it would be suitable for a large group of gorillas.
I must admit that if I had to make the decisions, my first priority would be a new enclosure for the bonobos as they seem much more highly strung and susceptible to stress than the other apes.

Yes, this is getting to be rather confusing, can we therefore attempt to clarify things please. It was intended that the green mile chimps were to be re housed in a new building, this would appear now not to be the case, instead they are to be re housed with the chimps in the existing houses, as I saw last week Jambo and Tojo are already in the old gorilla house with Ricky's group, although up to last week still separated, apparently this is to be completed by Christmas, although I was told it was not sure where Benjy and Rosie would be re housed as they have young Tuli to consider. We then her that some chimps may be moving into the one of the newer gorilla houses, I thought in Joe's side, we also here that Biddy may move in with the main gorilla group, if that is the case, what then will happen to Boulas?' will he be moved onto another collection or will he remain at Twycross living on his own or maybe in the future be joined there by other female gorillas. Twycross, we now hear are to build a new "temporary" gorilla house, is this to house the main breeding group?, if so are chimps to move in also to the newest gorilla house when this is vacated? Why build a new temporary gorilla house for this group when their existing accommodation is the newest and best great ape house in the zoo?,

In one word (if correct)? Twycross!

I believe it may have something to do with the silverbacks stressing each other out (though I can only imagine there's better (i.e. cheaper, quicker, less-convoluted) ways of dealing with this issue.

Also, you/we don't know what political (internal and external) pressures there might be meaning that this is the best way of achieving some end goal.

I suppose we can only really judge when (if) the whole process/roll out is completed. Hopefully it won't stall before getting there and the "musical enclosures" getting to the end result will be an acceptable temporary measure.

Why would they build a temporary gorilla exhibit and not a permanent one?
I agree with gentle lemur that something needs to be done with the bonobos, the exhibit is in no way equipped to house 2 groups. But that problem cold be solved rather easily and cheap by sending one group away. That would actually the first thing I`d do if it were my job to improve things in Twycross. The exisisting bonobo facility would be ok for now if they had only half the animals they have now.

Why would they build a temporary gorilla exhibit and not a permanent one?

My reading of it is that it is a temporary home for the breeding group of gorillas, not a temporary exhibit in itself. Presumably it will be used for another species in the long-term.
