Yes indeed. I don't know whether it's hardest to start with 2 large groups, several small groups or a batch of ill-socialised individuals. I do know that I wouldn't know where to start and I would be very worried by the task. I think it is tribute to all the keepers involved, and to the social nature of chimps, that all 3 projects succeeded.

The recent collection plan had Bornean orangutans not gorillas I think.

That is what I thought. I wish they would get Sumatrans though- there are so few holders in the UK (only Chester and Jersey).

Just checked through again, both orang and gorilla were on there (plus Siamangs for those lesser-ape lovers out there ). Gorilla is on page 92 of the pdf file collection plan, second to last before the white rhino

On a side note, it's nice to see all three 'available' [using the term loosely] species of rhino on the plans I don't think there are any UK zoos with more than 2 species of rhinocerotidae.

Whipsnade used to have the three, but phased out the Blacks as in later years they were spectacularly unsuccessful with them. Quinto ex Chester was the last one.

It would be quite an undertaking to exhibit all three species at Yorkshire WP. I guess Phase one would see a single species initially.

I believe EEP want more holders of Sumatrans as they are numerically much lower in the wild though captive numbers of each are approximately equal in European collections. So they would be doing this species a service by offering a new holding.

Given that, I wonder why they specified Borneans as the nearest orang utans are at Twycross with Borneans, Sumatrans are less common around the UK and tend to be more active which all seems to make them a very attractive choice.
Not that I wish to be choosy, I was thinking two weeks ago that I can hardly believe we have tigers just 40 mins away, apes of any kind would just be the icing on the cake.
(I can't believe I lived within walking distance of Regents Park for 5 yrs and only visited once.)

Very common behaviour- people often tend not to visit places on their doorstep that other folk travel long distances to see....

Sumatrans make so much a better display than Borneans, particularly if given masses of good enclosure equipment.
As far back as the 1930's Philalelphia kept both species of Orangutan and noted the significant differences between them, likening the Sumatrans to being comparable with Chimps activity wise.

Their masterplan is very ambitious and obviously played a major part in their EAZA application, but outwith the plan, i would like to see the park bring in some unusual or obscure species and really make a name for themselves in our world.

I went to Jersey and fell in love with their gorillas and was dismayed to see the cages the gorillas in London were in when I visited soon after, otherwise maybe I would have gone back.

On the latest "Master Plan" there appears to be a resteraunt west of the tigers. Does anyone know if work has begun on this building? The reason being, while I was there on Sunday I wandered up to have a look at the veiwing platform for the leopards and if you look through the woods to the left of the tigers, there seems to be a building of some sort. There was nothing on google earth from when it was still a farm park, so guessed that it was something new.
Any ideas?
