I just want to share a point, maybe it is just me overreacting but I thought I'd just get it out. If people are to talk about animals, in various posts, please instead of just mentioning the name, say what type of animal it is. There have been numerous times where someone has said 'Kabu' (just a random name) has passed away, and from that point there is no talk on what animal it is. Can be quite frustrating.

Also I would like to point out to some people that not every animal in a zoo has a name, which personally I believe most animals shouldn't have a name (just my personal thoughts), and that asking on every thread or photo what the animals names are, it can get quite annoying.

I hope I'm not offending anyone but just thought I had to get that out :).

I agree with you. It's so strange when people use the animal's name and not mention which species they mean.
 
I accept that it's unhelpful and would always try to remember not to do it but sometimes 'normal' people come on here, who visit one zoo, are very familiar with iconic animals and don't realise that other people are interested in many or all zoos. Therefore sometimes people will do that and I think the sarcastic and even nasty responses they get are uncalled for.
 
I agree that people should say what the species is as it is frustrating when you just get a name.

However, some people are interested in animal's names and I don't think they should have to worry about asking an animal's name if that is their interest.

We all have different interests here. I for one am not interested in lineage or in which individual animal went where but some people are. I am interested in zoo design and in which countries hold which species for example but not everybody is.

We are all different but have a zoo and animal interest in common and it's those differences, and respecting them, which make a community in my view.
 
Great point. I totally understand the various views people have. I think the thing that gets me most is not mentioning what kind of animal it is, just can be frustrating, can also be frustrating if from the name you can't tell if it is a male or female animal :D.
 
No idea how common it is, but to further complicate this, I know several zoo animals have multiple names. My understanding is that this usually happens when the keepers name the animal and then the zoo allows a sponsor to give it an 'official' name later. I've known this to happen in a number of instances, though the only example I can remember at the moment is the female anteater at the Santa Ana Zoo (she's Onion to the keepers, but Heesoo of Troy to the general public)
 
They also might not want the animal driven mad by people calling it's name continually so it has a public name and a 'real' name!
