Highlights of the year2011 and plans for 2012

Fair enough:mad:;)

Well i won't push you then, sounds all very exciting, hopefully it will all work out for you.

Thanks! Don't worry, once it's definite you'll be sick of hearing about it before long! :D

EDIT: Actually, if you really want to know, I did mention the country involved on my Twitter feed a few days ago. But I'll let you find it for yourself! :D

They're absolutely fantastic little creatures. I've only ever seen two - a Tiger Quoll at San Diego in 1998 (fast asleep on top of it's box) and an Eastern Quoll this year in Leipzig (very active - and they have a breeding group off-show). As far as I'm aware, Leipzig's are the only quolls outside Australia currently.

Columbus Zoo still has Tiger Quolls, I just saw them in July. But other than that and Leipzig I believe the world outside Australia is Quoll-less :)

Glad to know they're still about! I stand corrected then - Leipzig's are the only Eastern Quolls outside Australia. :)

They are even better seen in the wild- quite tame at campsites in Tasmania at night- or they used to be- I don't know what their current status is now.

Highlights for me were:
Valencia zoo - saw my first drill, otherwise a pretty standard collection but nice to visit a new zoo.
Valencia Oceanografic - exceeded my expectations, at least the aquarium side of things did. Only the second time I've seen beluga and walrus.
Heythrop - my second visit there and the first time I've seen ligers.
Isle-of-white – Zoo and Amazon World, my first visits.

I wouldn't say that - I saw three new mammal species in three successive exhibits - Southern Talapoin, Spot-necked Otter and Red-flanked Duiker (all three unique in Europe) - and there are plenty of other nice species - Klipspringer, Saddle-billed Stork, Spotted Hyaena, Hadada, Drill (as you say), Mona Guenon, White-naped Mangabey, Impala, Natal Red Duiker...

Considering it is limited to only one continent, and one that has a surfeit of big ABC species, it's actually a very nice line-up, I'd say.

Same here - you only really hear about the place in connection with marine mammals, so the scale and scope of the fish and aquatic invert displays caught me rather by surprise. Very enjoyable place.

I've had a very good year in visiting several zoo's and seeing a lot of new species.

I have many highlights so here's a few:
- The young zebra at Blackpool.
- The EAZA event at Chester.
- Seeing my first giant otters at Chester and South lakes.
- Visiting Terra Natura Benidorm over the summer.

Some of my plans for 2012 are:
- Visiting Edinburgh zoo to see giant pandas, Egyptian vultures, drills, koalas etc.
- Yorkshire wildlife park is on the cards.
- I also may be visiting the Chestnut centre, Chester zoo, Trotters, Blackbrook, Marton mere WWT, South lakes (again!) a few others too.

Does anybody know any small collections, zoo's or safari parks in the North west and any tips for the ones I maybe visiting?

I guess I was thinking more of animals I hadn't seen before. I tend to think of spotted hyaena as common zoo animals simply because I've seen a lot of them over the years and White-naped Mangabey are common in my mind because I visit RP a lot, the others you list I've seen previously but you are right of course, there are some rarely seen species.

Incidentally, are you certain of the species of talapoin? Zootierliste lists Miopithecus ogouensis, whereas ISIS lists Miopithecus talapoin. Also which talapoin did Suffolk have?

Out of the collections that you say may visit,Blackbrook is well worth a visit, but make sure you take a book to ID all the waterfowl as the labelling is terrible, and if you visit Martin Mere WWT I would suggest you visit while the swans are still over wintering on the site, its one of the most stunning views of the natural world seeing nothing but a sea of Swans on the Mere.

As for other collections in the North West, how about Bolton Animal World,Lakeland Wildlife Oasis,The World Owl Trust at Muncaster,Blue Planet Aquarium,a bit further over you could do Tropical World Leeds,Lotherton Hall Bird Garden and Harewood House Bird Garden

Well everydays a school day, as they say, I now know what talapoin is. AND it's a monkey. :)

Well just thought I would post my highlights for the year,

1) first off hitting the milestone of having visiting over 300 collections(still along way behind some people on here but not a bad number)
2) Visiting the World of Crocodiles,as a result I now only need to see Orinoco Crocodile and the species that were split from other species this year.
3) Visiting both the Zoo and Tierpark Berlin, having visited can say they are both superb collections for very different reasons,in the case of Tierpark when you walk about a place and consider a species like Bharal boring because its just down the path from Marco Polo Sheep. As for the Zoo it has to be its very unique building which just leave you asking why in some cases!
4) Seeing an Elephant swimming under water at Leipzig while watching a Pangolin out of the corner of my eye.
5) Having the chance to admire the sheer enginering scale of Gondwanaland.
6) The Aquadom at Berlin Sealife, going up inside a lift in the middle of a tank that is right in the middle of a hotel is very strange.
7) Seeing what could well be the only 3 Papuan Black Snake's left in the world, just hope they can breed them.
8) Finally the chance to see The King Cobra Sanctuary, before the tragic death of its founder Luke Yeomans.

I'm sure there are many that I have forgotten.I'm also pretty certain a highlight for Maguari and Robmv was seeing the look on my face at times going round the Zoo and Tierpark Berlin,or even the words uttered by myself on walking inside the Alfred Brehm House for the first time, sorry cannot post those words on this sight!!

Oh, I understand completely. I get the 'Chester effect' myself - I always forget how rare tuataras are, for instance!

Absolutely certain - the two are visually very distinctive (the face colouration in particular - see photos below). Valencia has kept both species; their Northern/ogouensis were moved to Fuengirola and a single Southern/talapoin remains.

All the talapoins that have been in Britain recently (including at Chester not so long ago) were Northern - as indeed are all the others I'm aware of in Europe. I'll contact Zootierliste about Valencia's as that ought to be fixed! :)

@ maguari thanks for enligtening me, as mazfc said, every days a school day ;)

I second the suggestion for Lakeland Wildlife Oasis, if only for the Fossa, thats all I went for after visiting SLWAP on sunday, its basically 30-40mins back towards the m6 from South Lakes. Bit Pricey for the size of the place, at near £10, so I would suggest paying the £20 for the season pass instead and you can visit again and again.

Just inside the border of wales, in Queensferry, is Green Acres Farm Park, these seem to be branching out into exotics, adding Squirrel Monkeys and Lemurs to their collection along with a few reptiles.

I've got a number of highlights from this year so far, including a long zoo-orientated weekend in Berlin, two summer visits (my first) to Zurich Zoo, a trip to Lisbon's oceanarium and a few new UK collections. With at least one overseas trip coming up before the new year, let's see what I can squeeze into December!

At Palmitos Park, on Gran Canaria (Canary Islands), there's a mixed enclosure for both Northern and Southern talapoin. I added the Southerns to zootierliste but I'm not sure why there's no trace of their listing at all.
