Edinburgh Zoo Pandamonium to hit Edinburgh! #2

Karen i think it was yourself i met at Tywcross Zoo earlier this year when i came to see the snowleopard cubs?... if so then now you know the feel i had about seeing those two little guys...lol

As far as i am lead to believe the ticket system is only till the end of January... however they might put it back in place at busy times... i think its kinda a wait and see thing. You need to prebook your ticket to get to see the pandas and their enclosure. Mines is already booked for the 13th of December... extremely excited! infact its whats gonna get me through working 5 12hr shifts next week...lol

There are some tickets available each day at the entrance but on a first come first served basis so to guarantee a viewing then you need to book a slot online at least 24 hours before you visit.

The post mortem event a few months ago was not cancelled and attended by many interested people who might object to being called weirdos (is it any weirder than watching it on television?). The animal was not a large animal but the patagonian sea lion pup which died and would have been post-mortemed by the zoo vet anyway to find out the cause of death, and a snake was also post-mortemed for the same reason. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean it was unsavoury as the procedure is carried out anyway and if some people are interested enought and keen to learn more about the workings of an animal and how/why a post mortem is carried out then I don't see what's wrong with that. Vet students probably made up most of the attendees as they don't often get the chance to observe the post mortem of an exotic species so whether or not they learn anything from it I don't think is for you to judge.
Cracker, Firstly I do find the loyalty you have for Edinburgh Zoo to be admirable, which I do respect. You mention that the dissection show did indeed go ahead, then why was it announced elsewhere on this forum that it had been cancelled for the date of August 23rd 2011 due to only 30 tickets being sold, perhaps what I read was just Scotch mist. The dissection which you refer to included a dead Patagonian sea lion pup, did this pup live in the 98 year old sea lion pool at Edinburgh Zoo which has been deemed officially unsatisfactory by the zoo inspectors?

It's not about loyalty, merely correcting some points. I don't know who posted that it was cancelled and where the info came from so I can't comment on that. I don't see the point in continuely bringing up negative points from the past and I feel that although mistakes are made the only thing than can be done is move forward. The post mortem showed that the pup was still-born and nothing from it suggested that it had anything to do with a 98 year old pool which the zoo knows is no longer suitable for sea lions. The inspectors advise the zoo accordingly and if the zoo does not comply with the inspectors then I'm sure you and many others will know then they would not be given a zoo licence.

I tend to agree with you here that constantly raking up the past isn't productive really.
No zoo is perfect and any with a history as long as Edinburgh's will have a string over mistakes over the years all of which they have learned from, times change and expertise moves on bringing improvements hopefully.

Personally I'm really chuffed that the Pandas are coming to Edinburgh, I understand the ticket system, I'll bloody hate being told to move on when I get there in truth as I like to watch and photograph the animals at my leisure, but if 'thems are the rules then thems are the rules' as they say and I'll just have to accept it.

Good luck to them and I hope the increased revenue they get from having the Pandas on display moves the rest of the collection on as they desire. I really hope they breed successfully if only to stick it to the nay sayers of the world!!

Looking forward to the Pandamonium ;)

well answered, cracker. its time for all to be positive and back edinburgh with their brave decision to work with the pandas,
unlike a lot of zoos edinburgh are very open and honest about their collection and their website is my favorite zoo site as it allows downloading of newsletters and annual reports and also gives great up to date news and info on the species they hold.
so well done edinburgh and I will certainly be visiting in the next year and not just to see the pandas.

Apparently its the first time a Zoo in the West has received a proven breeding pair (though not with each other), rather than younger animals short of maturity, or only one proven. So they could breed sooner rather than later- if they prove compatable and he is 'interested'. First baby Panda ever born in UK?

I think we should give them credit, they have a great collection and have had some real rarities in the UK zoo world and whilst some enclosures might not be perfect some others are truely excellent and they have a great site to work with.

Edinburgh Zoo certainly isn't a 'fading visitor attraction' as Zoocheck called them in a recent 'condemn anything happening in a zoo' press release and I hope they can really take advantage of the pandas' arrival to move forward and upward.

Thank you for confirming that Edinburgh Zoo has had no commercial sponsorship for the giant pandas, I wonder why?, The current economic climate I would think has a lot to do with it, everyone has their belts tightened, I personally think, however there is more to it than this, Edinburgh Zoo has not recently enjoyed good press, caused by, 1)Management difficulties, 2) the culling of two healthy red river hoglets, 3) animal welfare issues, including the sea lion pool and cat enclosures being deemed unsatisfactory by the official zoo inspectors.4) Advertising a show for £20 per ticket to watch a dead large animal being dissected in a "Inside Natures Giants" fashion, not even enough tickets booked for this spectacle by the ghouls and weirdos, resulting in this most unsavoury "show" being cancelled, resulting in even more negative publicity for this zoo, not to worry , people are buying at the gift shop, and don't forget the cuddly toy, good game, good game and didn't they do well!

One estimate has suggested that companies could pay up to £12,000 for a buffet served at the zoo's historic Mansion House before a one-hour exclusive viewing of Tian Tian and Yang Guang in their £250,000 enclosure.

The zoo said it had yet to finalise any plans for panda-themed corporate packages, team-building exercises or office away-days beyond its existing range of entertainment and conference facilities. A spokesman said officials were too busy prioritising the mammals' welfare, according to The Independent.

I think its amusing/amazing how the Press go GaGa over Pandas. The people who write this stuff must be an entirely different generation to those who wrote about other UK Panda arrivals in the 1960-80's eras but the text is always the same and its like history repeating itself. Wonderful stuff!:D

And they must nearly be here by now....:)

The chief executive of Edinburgh has travelled down to the Edinburgh airport so should be here soon!:D

They are gonna arrive at 1pm... its live on Sky News...lol..perfect way to spend a freezing snowy scottish day

Vienna, Madrid, Edinburgh and next year Beauval, who will be next to take the plunge, i wonder if any German collections are pondering for pandas?
Well done to all at RZSS for their hard work, starting many years ago, lots of delicate negotiations have finally paid of.
I do hope the visitor numbers match or even exceed expectations, they deserve it, plus it can only benefit the collection as a whole.

So do I as I know atleast one major UK zoo with alot more visitors than Edinburgh, worked out they would make a very large financial loss, over the term of the 10 year deal,so never took it beyond the stage of discussion with in the zoo!I really hope that Edinburgh don't as they deserve some good news after the year they have had so far!

Ouwehands in the Netherlands will probably the next one.

I would second that. If the crowds they are hoping for(initially at least) materialise they may not know what's hit them!
