Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium New "Top of the World" Exhibit

The building right behind the outdoor gorilla exhibit is the new animal care center. There only in the beginning stages of the new reptile house and its going to feature big reptiles. Nothing on the new orangutan or snow leopard exhibit nor the new animals that will be featured in the T.O.W. exhibit. :( so who knows when that will be annouced to the public.

Thanks again. The new reptile center I know will hold endangered reptile and amphibians, but I don't know what species.

Update: The zoo is in there early planning stages of this project and at this point there are no definitive animals or exhibits planned for this area.( Even thou the zoo came out and said that the snow leopard & Orangutan will get better exhibits) Specific planning and construction will not begin for a few years.

They might be slow with the plans for Top of the World because they are trying to figure out which animals they can actually get after the walrus exhibit. The public portion of the hospital opens next year. I also look for them to add more gorilla observation platforms along the path to the hospital to give guests more views of the gorillas. Maybe they will decided to renovated the bear exhibits first. I am getting tired of seeing empty bear exhibits.

Pittsburgh should not spend a penny to renovate its bear grottos.Outside of perhaps Buffalo they are some of the worst of their kind. Its our understanding that these exhibits sit virtually vacant because the zoo intends to demolish them to make way for Top of the World. We sure hope that the plans still include Orangs,Snowleopards and Spectacled Bears as these are some of the worst exhibits at the zoo and all very endangered.

Tiger Valley does bring up a good point about the walrus.

Bear grotto renovations are coming. jusko88 confirmed this in the zoo's photo gallery. There is a since saying it is coming in the near future. The bear grotto area has never been mentioned to be part of Top of the World, but it located adjacent to it.

Saw that are in the gallery after posting here, however we remain adamant that these grottos are in no way salvagable and shall continue to be inadaquate as long as they are used for housing bears.

so the new veterinary hospital is finally built like everyone knows and the simulated veterinary play station for kids will probably be open next year when zoo guests will be able to tour the new hospital. so the question is when will the five-acre expansion project Top of the world be started? The zoos spokesman and curator of Kids' Kingdom and reptiles,Henry Kacprzyk recently said in a interview with the Post Gazette that official exhibit planning will start in September. The project, which will lie at the top of the hill beyond the black bear area, also will include 10 to 13 outdoor exhibits. The Orangutans will get an outdoor area for the first time. as well as the one snow leopard will get a Bigger space and nicer exhibit. When the new exhibit is in, the zoo will be able to bring in more snow leopards from other zoos for the new exhibit. There will also be a 10,000-square-foot glass building with natural light and greenery almost like the phipps conservatory will hold a mix of reptiles and amphibians. The zoo wants to focus more on critically endangered amphibians because they are in trouble around the world. The zoo will also show you why were losing all these species with a exhibit on fungus called chytrid which has dramatically affected the population.a breeding program for Komodo dragons will come into affect as well as exhibiting Philippine crocodiles and Chinese alligators. They will all have outdoor exhibits. There will be new mammal species from endangered pigs to endangered hoofstock like wild cattle as well returning species like the Andean Bear.

I would like to see the zoo get Mountain Tapirs sincetheres none exhibited on east coast only in two zoos in america Los Angeles zoo & Cheyenne Mountain zoo.

Nice list Jusko88, but a majority of those are extremely unlikey, especially the kting voar, kouprey and saola, but still great ideas !!!

According to a high ranking source at the Pittsburgh Zoo Orangutans will not be part of the Top of the World project and there is a possibility that they will be phased out of the zoos collection. The same goes for Snow Leopards.Siamangs,Warty Pigs,Philippine Crocs and Clouded Leopards which were reported in the Post Gazzette a few weeks ago are confirmed to be part of the project. Its no surprise that money is the major factor in both slowing down and changing of this project. The individual I spoke with told me that if I had a few million dollars that we could probably get started right away.I was also told that no bear of any species will ever reside again in the current bear grottoes circa 1937 after the zoos lone female black bear passes. The grottoes however will always remain in some fashion as the are a major part of the infrastructure in that area of the zoo particularly the land which sits atop is the 6 acres which will at some point become Top of the World. The grottoes will however be altered. The 2nd phase of Top of the World will be be a species of bear. The zoo would like it to be a more endangered species like Spectacled Bears but its not confirmed at this point.

If the orangutans leave, it will be a sad day. I want Akron at add at least one species of great ape in their next expansion. Akron really needs primates. Maybe they could build an orangutan exhibit and have Ember and Jiwa Hati move in. Too bad there is not room around Tropical Forest to add on an outdoor exhibit. I wonder if the orangutans leave, if the gorillas will gain that space for their indoor exhibit since it is larger than their current indoor exhibit. I knew the zoo would wait on the bear area because where would they have had the detour around it until Top of the World opens. The way the grottos are built in the hill has always made be believe they would survive somehow. So far I am not surprised about the species mentioned. Smaller animals mean smaller exhibits which means more exhibits can be placed in this area. As a member of the zoo, I am anxiously waiting to see the plans for Top of the World.
