Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2011 #2

There is a requirement from the studbook keeper at Cobenhavn Zoo, that allows Western Chimpanzee females having 5 babys in their lifetime depending on their parentage. These was made to preserve high genetic diversity.

According to their website info, one of the Edinburgh (western) females has had a lot of offspring (but it doesn't say how many surviving?) So presumbly those in Edinburgh's group that have few or no offspring will be the ones allowed/encouraged to breed.

A very positive message has just been emailed out to members about the success of the pandas so far, the zoo is stable and the possibility of generating surplus income from the pandas to support reinvestment plus some stuff about increased communication with members-so here's to a positive and exciting next year at edinburgh zoo!

Glad it is working out. Looking forward to moving forward with masterplan.

It remains a question of media receptiveness (which in this case is sometimes rather hostile and puerile ...).

Does anyone know why they still have a map from summer 2010 on the website and if they are going to update it any time soon? Surely it would be better just to remove it from the website for the time being, especially as it doesn't show the pandas in this time of increased attention for the zoo.

They have changed the map that you get at the zoo and it now includes the pandas.. so it will only be a matter of time before the online one is also updated. Its just recent because the map i got on the 13th didnt have the pandas and the map i got yesterday did.

They also have brand new signs in the zoo that also includes the pandas... that was another new thing that i noticed yesterday on my visit

There have been a few other movings around as well - I was surprised at how few primates there were in the Magic Forest - although there is cuscus now.

From the sun bear end it runs

1 - North Luzon Cloud Rats Mum, dad and 2 young
2 - Goeldi's monkey, a new male and an existing female
3 - Pygmy marmosets parents and 2 young, grey legged douroucoulli parents and one young
4 - Golden headed lion tamarin male and female, red titi monkey female
5 - Ground cuscus male and female
