Chester Zoo Chester Zoo 2012

When will the Giant Otter underwater viewing be open? I am wanting to plan a trip to the zoo but want to see this on my trip.

Visited Chester today. A lot of people there which was nice to see but meant that the fast track enterence was really slow. Cheetah cubs quite active. The new aardvark den successfully blocks most of the indoor meerkat view, not impressed. The new aquatic exhibit in the Jaguar house looks good, even better when something is in it. Some people thought it was going to be for alligators, they'll be disapointed. As stated previously reptile exhibits have been removed. Replaced with a TV. I do really wander if Chester has any interest in exhibiting reptiles anymore. That makes over 3 dozen reptile exhibits taken away in the past few years. King ratsnakes in RofRa changed for Asian Water Dragons. Didn't make a more interesting exhibit as it was hidden at the back. That leaves just 8 species of snakes left on display. At this rate the only ones left to see will be made of rubber in the shop!

The only snake removed from spirit of the jaguar was the eyelash viper, which can be viewed in the tropical realm.

I am personally looking forward to seeing what the SotJ looks like when it's finished. It's looking good so far, and the new arrangement has sorted out the huge gap it used to have.
The bridge adjustment looks like it will help to ease the congestion in the jungle side, which will help matters in summer (in my opinion)

As am I.:)

I really liked SOTJ before the revamp the indoor areas for the jaguars are still very good and it is very spacious. I'm looking forward to seeing the return of the leaf-cutter ants, hopefully they don't escape this time;). From the photos in the gallery the fish exhibit is an interesting display does anybody know which species are to be held in the exhibit? I read somewhere that the Sloths and Agouti's (Different species or the one's already in the Zoo?) are to be mixing is this true?

I'm also very pleased that the jaguars have swapped enclosures, it gives other people to see the differences of the melanistic and spotted jaguars it really educates the public. Has there been any news on them mixing Pele and Sophia?

The eyelash pitviper can be seen in the tropical realm where it replaced another species- emerld tree boa. I do agree with your comments regarding SotJ with the hopefully reduced congestion.

Looking at the leaf-cutter ant display today (No ant as yet) I think that the lighting is much better, so should make a much better exhibit from that point of view. However the water surrounding it is reduced to a few inches so unless it is running water it will be like watching the "Great Escape"

I thought the Emerald tree boa (s) were on-show? I saw a single one on my last visit in June and since then there has been a few photos on the zoo's Facebook of them in the Tropical Realm. I don't know how many Chester have at present but didn't they breed the Eyelash pitvipers in 2009/10?

Crickey!

But with no ants on-show yet, I do suspect that they will be either running water or the zoo will have made it ant proof:D

The single emerald tree boa has been changed for a single eyelash pitviper with some dart frogs in the exhibit. The eyelash is nearly always in the back top right of the enclosure. Chester has bred them recently. I think she had 9 babies.:D

Thank you.:)

I knew she bred in Spirit of the Jaguar but not in Tropical Realm, are the offspring on-show with her?

Fish imported last year include

bleeding heart tetra
black neon tetra
lemon tetra
glowlight tetra

The plan is to also have a large shoal of discus fish.

The agoutis are Azara's agoutis.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I'm planning a trip for myself to the zoo sometime this week and the cheapest option is coach but it doesn't depart from the zoo until 17:15 and it closes at 16:00 doesn't it?

Just wondering is the whole zoo shut or will the cafe be open? If not, is there somewhere sheltered outside I could wait?

The zoo will be closed up shortly after 16:00,but there is a bus shelter outside the zoo that is covered.

The birds of paradise have gone to a collection in Germany.

I'll reserve judgement on Spirit of the Jaguar until it's finished, but it strikes me that there is still a lot of wasted space, and I'm not sure whether yet another information film blaring away in the background will be particularly palatable.

The tank is fascinating due to a strange optical effect when one looks down at it and moves closer, it's actually quite disconcerting and a few visitors I showed it to said it made them feel dizzy. The ant exhibit is hard to judge, the moat around it looks alarmingly small, but worse still, if I outstretch my arm I can actually reach the branches, something I personally won't be trying when the ants take up residence.

It's great to see the jaguars in rotation though, this afternoon both Pele and Sofia were in and out of waterfall side (although not seen together) with the other pair over in the savannah side.

Does that mean they have got Pele and Sofia together now?
