ZooParc de Beauval Pandas for Beauval - Confirmed

^i believe that the vienna pair are not separated during non-breeding times, so the male has the chance to experiance the build up to the heat, perhaps that is the key? I believe the situation was the same in mexico city, the most successful place for breeding Panda anywhere in the world outside of China.

I guess there must be a lot of variables involved in each different situation. But if the pair are compatable because they are familiar with each other that must be a help and it could be the key to some of the successes. I think Edinburgh's pair, while not together, have some sort of tactile contact through the dividing fence?

Not doubting you, but just asking: more successful than San Diego? They've had 4 or 5 panda cubs born in the last 10 years -- a remarkable record of success.

^i'm not sure on the time period, but there was 8 cubs born at mexico city, and for the time (the diplomatic gift stage) that was out-standing. i will look into it though, just to confirm it :)

Beauval will recieve their Pandas in a weeks time (they leave on Sunday 15th Jan!) :D

Oh, la la... these Pandas will probably be nearer to me than the ones at Edinburgh(but I've seen several Pandas in the past anyway).

This is quite an indepth, interesting article about the stresses of airtravel for the Giant Panda. Hopefully the Beaval pair will soon settle into their palatial -looking quarters. In Europe this must be one of the few instances where the animals haven't gone to the capital city's Zoo but elsewhere in the country. Vincennes Zoo in Paris is currently closed, but has had Giant Pandas in the past.

It's not to my taste but is quite impressive.

There seems to be a heavy accent on the Chinese -style buildings, rather than the enclosure itself. It looks okay but not much like panda country - a few fir trees and hotwired bamboo clumps might help if they really wanted it to resemble the Pandas' habitat. The palm trees seem a bit out of place too!

That's correct, Yang Yang and Long Hui were not seperated during the non-breeding days. They were seperated just a few days before Fu Long in 2007 and Fu Hu in 2010 were born, when Yang Yang started building her den. Even now, although Yang Yang is still nursing cubbie Fu Hu, 17 months old, the adult pandas are allowed to spend some time together e.g. when Fu Hu is sleeping inside the house.

Its possible that in the wild the adult males and females in adjacent territories(if they have such) are quite familiar outside of the breeding periods too.

Interesting that the female is still nursing her cub at 18 months old. I do not like the Chinese method of removing their cubs from the mothers at a much younger age and putting them into nurseries. It is not natural.

Bongo- I travelled to beauval by train a few years ago to research tree kangaroo husbandry, the journey is around 2 hrs I think from Paris and a ten minute car ride from the station to the zoos hotel opposite the zoo! The whole journey was about £ 100.

It will be interesting to see the impact the pandas have on the zoo.

A zoo that opened a whole new area in 2011 with indian rhino/antelope/deer , Malayan tapir, langurs and fishing cats.

And now an area with giant panda, red panda snow leopards and takin this year surely is already pretty successful financially!

Yang Yang was still nursing Fu Long at the age of about 2 years, until she didn't produce any milk any more. Fu Long was weaned naturally by his mommie not by the keepers! Fu Long was seperated from his mum at the age of 27 months, on the day, when he was transferred to China.

I don't like the idea to put panda cubs into a "kindergarden" at the young age of 4-6 months. But, in the kindergarden the pandas are allowed to join each other, they are living in groups of 4-8 panda cubs.

IMHO it's unnatural to wean = seperate cubs at the age of 18 months and force them to live alone, although they hear and smell mommie next door. That's what zoos in the USA are doing, just to get the next cub as soon as possible. This procedure is a bad experience for both mum and cub.

I'll bet there is a lot less discussion about them than Edinburgh's pair- simply due to the location.:)

Congratulations to Beauval. I had my doubts, that it really happened. Hope it'll gonna be a succesfull stay.

The discussions will start when the pandas are old enough for mating and she doesn't get pregnant asap ... but until that time they will have a great time at Beauval and everyone will enjoy love them ...
