Thought I start this thread here, for all irish members, who would like to share information about upcoming events in the area.

There are some upcoming talks and events, which I think will be interesting and worth attending:

12.1. - The Wildlife of Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Ranch: A Template for Preserving Endangered Wildlife in East Africa – a presentation by Jimmy O’Byrne. Townhouse Hotel, Naas, 8:00pm. Organized by Birdwatch Ireland, Kildare branch

21.1. Nature in Art - guided tour specially organized for the Irish Wildlife Trust by Dr Marie Bourke, Keeper, Head of Education. National Gallery of Ireland, 11 pm

Sorry, I’m digressing somewhat from the main topic of this thread, but I was extremely interested to learn that some of the talks will be held at the Natural History Museum in Dublin.

I knew that the building was closed, for safety reasons, after a staircase collapsed a few years ago and I hadn’t appreciated the museum had re-opened. Do you happen to know if the thylacine specimen is back on display?

They have still have it in collection, but I don´t know if it´s on display. I let you know after my next visit. But even if it isn´t on display, I am sure they would let you have a look at it, if you contact them, explain the reason a schedule an appointment.

But the Museum is open again and running, lots of events are scheduled for 2012, lots of family activities and etc.

Many thanks for the speedy response. I was disappointed that the museum was closed on my last visit to Dublin; now I know that it is open again, I'll have to arrange another visit sometime.

Wild Thoughts

First meeting of newly established discussion group for people interested in wildlife and conservation. There are no fees, no registration, everybody is welcome to join and share their thoughts.

Topic of the month - Children and Wildlife Conservation with special guest Sheila Murphy - Biology teacher and Dublin Zoo volunteer.

Are today´s kids interested in nature?
How do you introduce children to wildlife?
Are we raising a new generation of conservationists?
+ tips for wildlife games, websites, magazines, apps etc.

I would be very happy to see some of you there. ;)
 
Irish Widlife Trust - Upcoming Events

Tree Week Photo and Mammal walk in the Phoenix Park
Time and Date: Saturday 25th of February at 11.00am
Meeting Point: 11am at the Phoenix Park School. The Dublin Branch is planning on meeting up in the Phoenix Park to hunt for some sessile oaks to take some group photos and promote our fabulous upcoming Tree Week Events. After the photo shoot, Dr. Favel Naulty will lead a walk around the Phoenix Park and will talk about the mammals that are found there. Families, friends and children are all welcome to this event.

Directions: Enter through the Ashtown gate turn left at the T junction, (evergreen oaks all to your left side) and keep going along the road until you see the school on your left hand side. There is a small parking area available in front of the school - alternatively Ashtown gate can be reached from the city centre via the number 37 bus from the city centre.

Mammal Conservation Workshop
Time and Date: Saturday 3rd March, 09:30- 16:30
Meeting Point: Marley House, Marley Park, Dublin 16.
IWT Dublin branch are linking up with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to take part in small mammal surveying. This workshop will include presentations on basic ecology as well as survey methods. Places are limited so booking is essential. Please email dublinbranch@iwt.ie

Dublin Branch IWT Celebrate Tree Week
Time and Date:Saturday10th March, 14:30
Meeting Point: Killiney Hill; car park off Burton Road and St Annes; Red Stables car park
Details: Dublin Branch IWT invites the citizens of Dublin to learn about, enjoy and value trees in two of Dublin’s well know outdoor parks as part of Tree Week.

Ireland’s BioBlitz 2012

A significant development for 2012 is that BioBlitz has now become a cross border event. We are delighted to announce that CEDaR, Northern Ireland will join forces with the National Biodiversity Data Centre on 18 & 19 May.

The 4 parks for BioBlitz 2012 are:

Crawfordsburn Country Park, Co Down
Glengarriff National Nature Reserve, Co. Cork
Lough Boora, Co. Offaly
Phoenix Park, Dublin8

I'm pretty sure it is still on display on the second floor with the other Marsupials. there is also a Giant panda on display which was one of only two or three on show in the whole world at the time it first went on display! This is an unappreciated gem of a museum!

The mezzanine floors with most of the birds are still closed however!

Dublin Branch EU Ocean 2012 Campaign Fish Weeks package!

Event: Killiney Beach Walk
Date: Saturday 9th June at 9am sharp (Tide will be on the turn)
Meeting point: At Killiney Dart Station.
Cost: Free of charge
Description: Dublin Branch Celebrates World Ocean's Day. Join Tim Clabon, a marine and wetland expert on Killiney Beach to explore the kelp beds and explore the associated coastal habitat during the Spring low tides. Please wear either wellies or good waterproof books and suitable clothing.

Event: Two boat trips to Ireland’s Eye
Date: Saturday, 16th June at 11am and Saturday, 7th July at 11 am
Meeting point: Trips depart from the East Pier of Howth Harbour
Cost: The price for the trip is € 10 for under 16s, € 15 for adult members and € 20 for non-members.
Description: Ireland’s Eye lies of Howth Head. Large numbers of seabirds breed on this charming uninhabited island which is a special area of conservation. When we visited it last year, we gandered by gannets, peered at puffins, raved over razorbills, gazed at gulls and also saw some seals. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy the same sights on this year’s trips. Conn Flynn, Conservation Officer with the IWT will be leading both events.


Event: Visit to SEA LIFE Bray
Date: Saturday 23rd June
Cost: 7 euro Time: Meet outside SEA LIFE Bray at 10.30am
Description: The National SEA LIFE Centre Bray takes you on a journey of the deep... without getting wet! This special guided tour of the aquarium with a dedicated SEA LIFE expert will leave in wonder and awe as you discover amazing facts and come face to face with a Giant Pacific Octopus , sharks and many other creatures. This years new feature is a trail of rays featuring Irelands only Cownose Rays. The tour of the centre will take an hour with the opportunity to partake in photo for the OCEANS 2012 campaign at 12pm.


Event: Bray Beach Clean
Date: July 28th Time TBC
Cost: Free of charge
Description: Some of our best loved marine wildlife is under threat from the waste and litter in our seas, with hundreds of species accidentally eating or becoming entangled in litter. Litter on our beaches is also hazardous to people so we all have a part to play in turning the tide on litter. In association with Clean Coasts and SEA LIFE Bray join us for a beach clean on Bray beach.


Event:Sandycove Seashore Safari
Date: Sunday 12th of August
Cost: 5 euro (all proceeds to IWT)
Time: Meet at James Joyce tower at Sandcove Beach at 1pm
Description: Bring your buckets to Sandycove beach for a unique rockpooling event. This event will be supported by Marine Biologists and will include scavenger hunts making it fun for all the family!

FREE TRAINING ON LEISLER’S BAT ROOST IDENTIFICATION, PHOENIX PARK

contact dublinbatgroup@gmail.com, if you want to get involved.

You will be given training on how to survey for this species and loaned a bat detector to carry out surveys in summer 2012.
