My own zoo

Hi all, well here my idea for a zoo. It's a bit different to those discussed here which is why I think it might be a good idea.

It would be called the Small Animal Zoo and focus on exactly that, small animals. Specifically those below 10kg (or 15???). The collection would contain Rodents, Shrews, Hedgehogs, small cats, marsupials etc. as well as a large collection of amphibians and reptiles. There would also be a large bird collection.

The main idea is to assemble species that the public are unlikely to ever see otherwise. Either in captivity or in the wild. Examples are the Slogget's Ice Rat and the African Crested Rat.

The plan is that the buildings will be modern in appearance but the cages themselves will be naturalized. Due to the skittish nature of these animals there will be double layered glass on the front of enclosures and the inner layer will be one way. This is so the public can enjoy seeing the animals and their behaviour without stressing out the animals. Also people cant throw rubbish into the enclosures. For animals requiering more space large outdoor enclosures will be provided with one-way glass windows into the indoor shelters.

Collection organisation will focus more on diet than area of origin but I will attempt to group all australian shrews together (For example). So frugivores will be in a seperate area to say a closely related insectivore but Shrews will be grouped together.

The majority of the bird collection will be in multiple walk-through enclosures with mixed species in as close to natural habitat as possible. E.g African finches and weavers.....
But the predatory birds and those that do not do well in mixed collections will have aviaries lining a path around the institution.

There will of course be a restraunt area as well as a petting zoo, as well as several irrisistable exibits that break the 10kg rule.

If I get my way this little zoo will open in ten years or so in South Africa. Any suggestions on improving idea? Also ideas for funding would be nice. I appologise for my spelling.

Planning is the easy bit, I can just imagine the logistics of getting this running:eek:

Will small primates be included as well?

Just double-checking, are the walk-through aviaries going to be divided up more by habitat, location, taxonomically, or something different?

Kenwood Zoo that I made

Not all of the species are displayed or named and many of the buildings are un-proportional, but that doesn't matter too much. This took me 3 total days to make using a simple program called "Paint". If you want, you could request me to make one and I'll do it. Enjoy.

Exhibits and their location:

Colo city: 4, 2
Prosimian Paradise: 5, 2
Planet of the Pigs: 5, 1
River Adventures Though the Southeast: 5, 3
Sloth Line: 4, 3
Comeback Country: 5, 5
Little 'Mates: 3, 4
Kings of the Congo: 3, 5
Australian Aves: 2, 5
African Aves: 3, 5
Lory Lovin': 2, 4
Nile Encounters: 3, 3
Vanishings of the Highlands: 1-3, 1
Pachydermia:1, 3
Swinging Trails: 1, 5

Hi, it would also incluse the small primates.

Avairies would include species of similar taxonomy and location so long as cross breeding can be avoided, some species in the avairy will be of other taxonomic groups so as to have as wide a range of animals as possible.
There will probably be more than one avairy per toxonomic group so cross species breeding can be avoided.

Indian Hill Wildlife Park

The people of Cincinnati that have read this probably know that my zoos are named after a small city or a township in Cincy. This zoo is one that I made today on a small city zoo on Zoo Tycoon 1. That is why the map is so small. Like my other zoos, this one has no themed attractions. In the buildings there are toucans, lorikeets, lemurs, giant tortoises, chameleons, a reticulated python, kings cobras, scorpions of Africa and poisonous spiders.

Names of the Animals:

ZB stands for Born at the zoo

Leopards

Moebelle, I love how you and PAT have taken your designs to the next level by creating maps for us to see. It gives us an even more intimate image of your idea.

This latest one is stunning! I'm glad you went through the trouble to make this; it's a very brilliant exhibit design, and one that I wouldn't mind seeing built in a zoo! :D (I believe Singapore Zoo was working on something similar?...)

Moebelle, would you mind posting your original River Adventures description from the "Your Dream Exhibit" thread here on this thread as well?

Couldn't have put the compliment any better, thanks a billion:):):):).

"River Adventures Through the Southeast": Take .65 mile boat ride through famous islands of Southeast Asia. The ride would take you through about 4 acres of four greenhouses with 1-3 exhibits on each side of the boat and about 6-7 exhibits total. Each exhibit would be 15,000 sq ft (First exhibit in Lords of the Arctic-Cincinnati Zoo). There would be space between the boat on either side so that guests could view tanks with fish native to that certain island, and the animals who like to swim. Also each exhibit would be surrounded by tall rocks and trees, along with a cave area at the end of each island, with 2-3, 7-10ft by 3-10ft tanks. Each area would have windows above the barriers allowing guests and the animals to see the daylight. If I have time I will even draw out the plans.

The first one would take you through Borneo. On one side would be an exhibit for Bornean orangutans and Mueller's gibbons. On the other side there would be the endangered clouded leopard and adjacent to them would be a small but tall aviary for rhinoceros hornbills. The whole exhibit would be not netted, but covered with a glazed viewing window for protection from the animals. Through the whole exhibit there would be free-flying birds like barbets and white-eyes and each tank would feature Amazon leaf fish. As you exit through a cave going to the next island, there would be 5ft by 3ft terrariums across form each other containing green tree pythons in one and cicadas in the other.

In Sumatra, it is extremely similar but of course different animals, and the river that the boat is on would curve to the left a bit(because it goes in a circle. On the right would be an exhibit featuring Sumatran orangutans and white-handed gibbons. On the left would be Thomas' Leaf Monkeys. What is different from the Borneo exhibit, is that the primates have access to either exhibit with ropes and bars going over the boat. In case of "accidents" there would be a glass canopy over top the whole stream. There would again be free-flying birds like Pale-headed Frogmouths, Graceful Pittas, and Shiny Whistling-Thrushes. The fish collection would consist of Sumatran barbs, Chocolate gouramis and other tiger fish. While exiting through another small cave there would be not just 2, but three exhibits. The side exhibits would have tarsiers in one, and the other, Pope's tree vipers. The last one would actually be a darker exhibit with Sumatran Mastiff bats hanging right above you.

Enter into the island of Komodo to view another world of the predator and prey. On the right side of the river, would be the largest lizard in the world, which is of course the Komodo dragon. If I were the designer of this exhibit(which I am in my dreams:D) I would make the dragon exhibit a bit lower for the guests to see the low-built creature. Also the tank with the fish in it would cut off by a 2ft tall see-through glass fence. The dragon/s would have a separate pool in the back. While on the other side there is the tall water buffalo. The tank water and floor would be hired, but the viewing glass would even be higher so that the water buffalo has it’s time to swim, but also to have no chance of hurting or splashing the guests. The buffalo exhibit would be netted from top to bottom. Along with being in the netting would be Jambu fruit doves, Bali mynahs and more. In the cave area would be: the Komodo dragon den, and an Indonesian species, the banded palm civet.

The last but not least exhibit would be the island of Malaysia. On the right display, there would a mysterious pachyderm that has a white back but the rest is black. This is the Malayan tapir. The pool would be a bit drained but there would also be steps for the creatures to walk in it. While they are on the ground, above them would be agile gibbons. In a separate aviary in the tapir exhibit, there would lie lesser adjutant storks. Across from all this would be the largest of all living reptiles, the salt-water crocodile. In the cave area, one side would feature the Sunda loris, and the other would have black and grey shrews.

See map for the other two islands.

I am willing to make your zoo come alive if you want. All I would need is the exhibit names and the species list, the location of the exhibits, and a PM including all of this.

KoalabbY Walk-through

Not my best. Parma wallabies on one side only fenced in by rope(and the cage), and koalas on the other fenced in by 2ft tall acrylic glass. All kept in in a large, cube-shaped cage.

The Great American Prairie
COMING TO "DESIGN A ZOO"
February 4th
*With sneak peaks of the Kaziranga Grasslands
and
The Andes: Mighty Mountaineers!*

Sorry for the delay. I've been working on a drawing of TGAP's pronghorn and American Bison exhibit, but I've been busy all week, so I haven't got to completing it. This weekend is looking good for me schedule-wise; so some work is bound to get done. I've been wanting to release these exhibits for a while now, hopefully I can get to it! :D

And now...
A sneak preview of AnaheimZoo's
The Great American Prairie

...As you make your way through the glass doors, you find yourself on the inside of a rock cave. A closer inspection of the walls’ crevices and ledges reveal the bones of small rodents, the ripped-up remains of crickets, and what appears to be a bird’s regurgitated pellets. There are holes in the corners of the room tunneling into the ground, but it is clear that a prairie dog does not live here. You then hear a few distant hoo-HOOH… hoo-HOOH and h-h-RHH, t-chk, t-chk, t-chk calls, and decide to head forward...

Well, I am excited to announce that my newest exhibit design is almost complete! I was extremely worried that I would not make this February 4th deadline, but I have been working relentlessly since early afternoon on Feb. 3rd as to not keep you guys waiting. It is currently 12:33 in the morning, and I still have another 20 hours or so to work if I'd like! :D

Just a few more exhibits to describe... then spell-check and revising, etc., and I'm finished! So be sure to tune in to Design A Zoo Saturday night, for those of you who've been anticipating the release of The Great American Prairie! (Moebelle... ;))

My ideal zoo would be a sprawling complex that is a combination drive-through and walk-through. This would be located in Southern California in the Inland Empire region. The park would be organized into biomes. Each biome would be separated creatively by geographical area.

The first part of the drive-through would be a dry woodland biome. The first area would be forests of the Mediterranean region and the second area would be dedicated to forests in California.

Wild Boar
Roe Deer
Fallow Deer
Brown Bear (separated from prey species)
Gray Wolf (separated from prey species)

California Forest Species

Barsingha
Four-horned Antelope
Gaur
Cow Elephant herd
Bengal Tiger
Leopard

African Woodland

The walkthrough area would feature outdoor aviaries arranged geographically. For example, an African aviary would have an outdoor one featuring crowned cranes, shoebill storks, pink-backed pelicans, guinea fowls, and assorted waterfowl. It would lead to an indoor exhibit featuring smaller birds, freshwater fish, reptiles, and small mammals. There would be one of these for India, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, California, Asia, and Australia. In addition, there would be a petting zoo as well as exhibits of less common domestic animals like Brahman cattle, Ankole cattle, and Texas longhorns. Birds like turkeys and peafowl would roam freely. There would also be a huge crocodilian exhibit arranged taxonomically as well as an indoor butterfly garden.
