5 Must See Species Before You Die

Being that many of our fellow ZooChaters are quite young, this might not sound like such a daunting task. However, for some of us older members (I'll be 57 this May), it will take a bit more effort on our parts. So to start things off, here are 5 of my must see species, in no particular order:

Platypus
Mountain Gorilla
Whale Shark
Indri
Giant Armadillo

I’m sure that this topic has been discussed before.....

Of the five species on your list, I have been fortunate enough to see both mountain gorilla and giant armadillo. I would very much like to see the other three species you mention, but the five species that I would most like to see are:-

• Javan rhinoceros
• African water chevrotain
• mountain nyala
• chiru
• African manatee

although I doubt that I ever will.

I'm sure we've discussed it, but that's why I've limited the lists to only 5. And although the chances of ever seeing certain ones are very doubtful Tim May, we can still dream.

I'd say:

Ivory-billed Woodpecker
Narwhal
Baikal Teal
Sumatran Rhinoceros
Wattled Crane (Wild)

Bonus: Sasquatch

That's a toughie, out of every extant species it'd probably be these 5 [although I can't decide whether one should come off in favour of blue whale]:

Javan rhinoceros
Sumatran rhinoceros
Emperor penguin
California condor
Golden snub-nosed monkey

I assume that we're talking about seeing the species in the wild? That is the assumption of my list:

African forest elephant
Asian elephant
Komodo dragon
Some kind of penguin species
Some kind of definitive proof (photograph, chemical analysis, etc.) that there is life somewhere other than Earth (e.g., microbes on Mars or in the oceans of Europa)

just make a funding application to go do a study of Rothschild's giraffes in Uganda, and then sneak off to see the forest elephants :D

(I was going to add "and the mountain gorillas" but apparently you'd rather see aliens than gorillas! ;))

Javan Rhino, if I had your list I'd be a happy camper before I died. I've seen every single species you've listed on many occasions, minus the your namesake, the Javan Rhinoceros.

Since we are on the ZooChat website, the list can include wild and captive.

Platypus
Mountain Gorilla
Whale Shark
Indri
Giant Armadillo

I'm sure the whale shark is doable for you, Blackduiker. That is if you're willing enough to take a plane (or maybe even a road trip) to Georgia and visit their aquarium! (Wait, they still have their whale sharks, right? :p)

Woops! Tim May beat me to it!

Javan rhinoceros

I saw that one coming. :D

@KCZooFan: Hmmmm, Sasquatch... good luck with that... :P

My 5 are going to have to be:
Sichuan Takin
Saiga
Narwhal
Jentink's Duiker
Superb Bird-of-Paradise

That was incredibly tough; I think I might come back later to substitute a few. I remember the breathtaking display of the superb bird-of-paradise on Planet Earth, which made me think that I'd like to see all of the bird-of-paradise species in New Guinea one day! Jentink's duiker is such a beautiful animal, narwhals are extremely rare, and sichuan takins are one of my favorite animals. Saiga, they're, uh, not one of my favorites (but I think they crack my top 150 :)), but a rarity that hopefully will be in captivity again soon (along with more Jentink's duiker) depending on how my zoo comes along. :D

I've been attacked by a superb bird of paradise ,and rubbed a takin :)

For me its hard....I'll have to think on it...
