I do not agree with some of the Monkey World involvement in this. In Chili there is a rescue center perfectly capable of providing a good home for the lab capuchins. No need to make them transport these unfortunate monkeys intercontinental style though.

The Chilean center has quite a few species in family groups already (woolly monkey, howlers, tamarins and capuchins). Please check their website at Centro de Primates Peñaflor.

They were only suposted to have 35 of them :) but ended up with more
 
they now have a total of 94
88 from chile
2 rescued frm the pet trade the same time]
and the original 4,tom,tj,gismo and terri.


A new baby wooly on the way next month:Paquita is pregnant
Yarima's 3 month old baby girl wooly is called inka

Semach has been introduced to ben and pip

Im sure they didnt

monkey world website said they came from various pet trades and also a few collections in sweden and denmark (i never heard that they came from howletts) but i might be wrong
 
I am almost certain the core group came from apenheul and then there were three 'rescued' animals added, together with the births they've had, making up the current group.

yes, i think that was the one! im sure they returned some back to apenheul, the 2 females from the smaller group (in the macaque house) i think

I'd be rather surprised if Howletts sent any animals (e.g. Woolly Monkeys) to Monkey World- it just doesn't seem like them to do so..
 
Well Im nearly 100% sure that was what i was told by a friend who worked there at the time but i could be wrong!:confused: Jim worked at Howletts previously aswell so I thought there was a connection! If im wrong I wonder where the howletts animals went!?? any ideas?:)

lol no need to apologise we all get ot wrong sometimes, I hear that much zoo news sometimes its easy to get it mixed up!:)
 
That still leaves the mystery of where the Howletts group went. Howletts have a history with woollys...they had them in the early years through to the start of the 1980's but they died out or were moved away.

This later group arrived in the late 1990's, and were put into the right-hand side of a new monkey cage in Howlett's woods, adjacent to the Dusky langurs, which I think arrived the same time. Part of me thinks the Howlett's animals also originated from apenheul, but my memory is hazy on that one. Last time I saw them there was at least one infant, though it was possibly old enough to have arrived with the group. I cannot work out why they were gone within maybe 5 or 6 years. My only guess is that it was a similar story to the doucs...a couple of important breeding animals died leaving a related group with little prospect of long-term survival and so the group was disbanded. It may well have a lot to do with the fact that the twycross animals are hybrids and the Looe Monkey Sanctuary group certainly aren't up for transfer to any zoos.

what type of wolly monkeys where they, becuase monkey world only keeps humbolts

and have you emailed the zoo and ask them?
 
##ANSWER TO WOOLLY MONKEY ISSUE##

just got this email from monkey world, it explains the dissaperance of the howletts monkeys:

"In answer to your question only Xusy is wild caught originating from the high mountains of Colombia, but finding her way to Appenheul in Holland. The remaining individuals are captive born: Branco came direct from Appenheul to Monkey World, while Levar, Kuna, Yarima and Bueno also came from Appenheul but via Twycross (Bueno) and Howletts Zoo (Levar, Kuna, Yarima). Piquita was born at Twycross. All are part of the European captive Breeding Programme. We now have in addition Lena, Julio and Paulo born at Monkey World."
