Last wednesday, August 8, a little elephant girl was born at Emmen Zoo. She is named Swe Zin (Fabulous), and is the fifth baby of Htoo Kin Aye. The father is the mighty Radza.

Look here for some photos I took last Friday; Swe Zin 10-08-2007 pictures from outdoors photos on webshots

During the day I was visting the zoo, a bison was born. Unfortunately I did not see it but a lot of other visitors did!

Yesterday night (Mo 25th feb) elephant number 18! was born at Emmen Zoo. This time a (yet another...) male born to mother Htoo Yin Aye and father (the still mighty) Radza.

I'll bet 10 bucks that UntBwe will be posting pictures after the coming weekend...

Mighty Radza is the right word for this bull, I was reading some info on the net about him, it says he is the biggest bull in Europe at over ten feet and weight of 7.5 tonnes, thats some jumbo, seems like hes quite the stud as well, wonder if any of the other bull over there come close to him?

Radza is. to my knowledge, certainly the most impressive bull held in any European Zoo. No other bull has such superb tusks. I don't think any other bull has such a strong breeding record although that's more affected by group size and husbandry.

Define "breeding record" because Radza isn't the most prolific bull (perhaps yet) in Europe. He did get quite a few females pregnant in quite a short time, if that's what you mean. But other bulls can do that just the same if the possibilities are there...

(Hopefully, Alexander who is now at Amersfoort with 4 willing females, will ;))

Though Radza is a very impressive bull with his enormous tusks he does not keep the breeding record of E.m. (elephas maximus) in Europe!

1.Naing Thein (now Praha) : 14 descendants (Emmen)
2.Hussein (Hamburg) : 12 descendants
3.Chieng Mai (Kobenhavn): 11 descendants
4.Chang (now Dompierre): 11 descendants (Chester)
5.Maxi (Zuerich): 11 descendants
etc.....

Radza (Emmen): 6 descendants

And worldwide it is Motek (Ramat Gan): 17 descendants!

May i correct sitara but i think that Naing Thein has 15 descendants, there was a stillbirth in 1998 by Khaing Lwin Htoo.

Well, it's a bit unfair to compare Radza with Naing Thein. Because Radza was standing in a cramped exhibit in Riga for many years with two females. He came to Riga in 1974 together with Zita who was 5 years at arrival. Radza however could mate her and in 1990 Suzanna was born (now living in Kobe, Japan). Zita died 3 months after the birth of Suzanna. In 1996 the 21 years old Rupa came to Riga but she never had any offspring.

Naing Thein came together with 6 ladies of his own age to Emmen. So he had a lot more chance to mate, and with far more vertile females.

Immediately after arrival in Emmen Radza took his chance and mated some cows. Including Khaing Lwin Htoo who shortly after was relocated to Cologne. In 4 years and 5 months he had 5 descendants, an average of 10.6 months per calf. While Naing Thein had 15 in 13 years, an average of 10.4 months per calf. Almost the same. If Radza can stay 7 years he can have 8 more calfs. 8 + 5 + 1 (Suzanna) = 14.

Well, it's just a theory of course.

Swe San Htay of Emmen seems to had a premature stillbirth on March 7 this year. The appr. six months old foetus was trampled by the other members of the herd. (source: European Elephant Grroup).

Wow, thanks for the news, that is truely unfortunate, I'm very surprised that the herd reacted like that espcially with a one like Emmen's, how premature was the Calf delivery? Must of been early to some extent because of Unt Bwe's birth on 23/5/06,

I'm so sorry, I can't read sometimes, I must say it is great to hear from you again,

Mingalar Oo gave birth today in the outside enclosure (i bet more or less accidently, but everything went well as far as i understood) :)

It's probably another male (beuh, too many male infants at Emmen if you ask me). Father is (off course) Radza.
