Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Beardsley Zoo News

Wow! That sure would've been great to see. That's a shame... Do you know why it was canceled and when was it set to be opened? Do you have any links to information about it? Where was it supposed to be located on the zoo grounds?

Why am I asking so many questions??? :p
(Probably 'cause I wanted to see that anteater... I've never seen those before, unfortunately, I don't think. Maybe when I was younger, but I wouldn't remember that... :()

Actually, not sure if it was canceled but it's been postponed for a long time.

When I went in May, I talked to a keeper about Andes Adventure, and she said that because of lack of funding, if the exhibit was to open, it would be in about 2016. A real shame because that would mean about 12 years of working on it for only $7 million.
I think that the exhibit was a quarter of a mile long walkway that would have 2 parts to it. One part was to be called Condor Pass, and would feature animals that are in the jaguar's natural range that can be viewed by a boardwalk. The second part would be called Jaguar Walk, and would have non-visible barriers between cat and person, and would allow very close encounters.
I think these are the species that would be included:
Jaguar
Andean Condor
Andean Bear
Maned Wolf
Chacoan Peccary
Darwin's Rhea
Giant Anteater
Cabybara
Spider Monkey
And maybe Tapir? I think there might have been more species but I can't remember.

That really would've been nice to see. I do hope the exhibit is opened one day, even if it is in 2016. Capybaras, anteaters, spectacled bears and jaguars; you can't go wrong with those. :p

I know, if they do open the exhibit, maybe they can include the Llamas they have now, and replace the Darwin's Rheas with the Greater Rheas they have now.
Also, if they do add species later on, animals like Bush Dogs, Giant Otters, or Guanacos would be great additions:p

Exhibit Crisis

There is an exhibit crisis going on at Beardsley Zoo. It started in April, when 4 Snowy Owl siblings arrived from Hannover Zoo. 2 of the owls went on exhibit in the former Canada Lynx exhibit, and the other 2 remained in quarantine, waiting for exhibit space. I though the owls would just be in there for a little while, but they have been in quarantine for almost a year. In addition, Canada Lynx have returned to the zoo and have taken up space in the Snowy Owl exhibit. The owls on exhibit went to the only available exhibit space at the zoo; the back of the Rainforest Building. Not only are rainforests the EXACT opposite of the Arctic, but that space is the Howler Monkey's summer exhibit. So what is going to happen in the summer when Howler Monkeys need their Vitamin D and Snowy Owls are in their exhibit. In addition, 2 new Greater Rheas arrived at the zoo and went on exhibit in the New England Farmyard. Their exhibit is pretty small there and they are South American birds in a New England themed exhibit. This crisis is absolutely crazy.
However, I have some ideas. The zoo is planning to bring in a new Andean Condor in the spring. I think a better idea would be to send the owl pair that is on exhibit to the former Andean Condor exhibit. Then, I would send the 2 owls in quarantine and one of the owls on exhibit to another zoo, and bring in a breeding partner for the remaining owl. This would give the Howler Monkeys their summer exhibit back, send the owls in quarantine to a place that will give them an exhibit, and help the zoo breed Snowy Owls, which was one of their plans when they got the owls. Then, I would put the rheas in the llama exhibit. This would put the rheas in a South American exhibit and give them more space, and let the Dexter Cattle exhibit be expanded into the former rhea exhibit.
Please let me know if this is a good idea to suggest to the zoo. :)

This is a very well thought-out plan, BeardsleyZooFan. This would be benefit all of the animals imo: the dexter cattle, the rheas (as you said) would have more space, the snowy owl would be in a more suitable enclosure and have a chance to breed, the three other owls would go to another zoo, and the condors would benefit from it because they wouldn't have such a small exhibit. I mean, no offense, that cage is a bit too small for condors...

Suggest this to the zoo. I hope they go through with your idea.

Anaheim, you may have already been there but Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence,RI has Giant Anteaters, since you mentioned wanting to see them. And if you want to go even further north, Franklin Park Zoo in Boston has an Anteater too.

Beardsley,I've been going down to Beardsley Zoo for about 5 or 6 years and all that time their zoo map has said future Asia expansion(or something like that) on it. Last year I asked somebody at the entrance about it and she said it's been on their map for years and probably will never happen. I would love to see them expand too but judging by her reaction, it won't be happening anytime soon. Seems like it's always the zoos that get cut from the city budgets.

Have either of you been to Action Wildlife in Goshen,CT?

Yes, I have heard about the Asia expansion. I haven't seen it on any of the maps I've gotten recently, so I guess that just confirms that it won't be happening any time soon.:( A shame, as I would love to see a new enclosure for the Amur Tigers, and it would be nice to see some new species come to the zoo, like maybe Red Pandas, Snow Leopards, Sun Bears, or White-Naped Cranes. I also think the Andes Adventure project, which was actually more serious and the zoo was going to construct that exhibit, has been canceled or put off:(. The zoo just couldn't even acquire $7 million for state funding.
No, I haven't been to Action Wildlife, though I have passed it before. I've looked it up though and saw their website. They have only a few of the animals that are displayed on that giant mural up there, and no predators, which is a big thing for me in zoos. In addition, seeing their indoor petting zoo reminded me of the remains of Auschwitz.
Action Wildlife

Phantom Gaur, I have not been to RWPZ, and I've also wanted to go there (mainly to see the elephants, though! :D), too. Although it's small, it has a nice collection and I would love to visit it one day.

On my visit today, I noticed several new things.
The 2 new Maned Wolves are now on exhibit in the nice weather.
The Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs are now on exhibit again after winter.
The Reptiles of Connecticut building is now open again.
It seems that the Golden-Lion Tamarin offspring from 2006? have been sent to another zoo, as I didn't see them in February or today.
There are now Boa Constrictors in the former Yellow Anaconda exhibit.
That's it for now.

Reptiles of Connecticut is that building in the New England Farmyard with the snakes, frogs, turtles, and other reptiles/amphibians.
I also forgot to mention that there are now Trumpeter Swans in the New England Farmyard. Not in the main duck pond, but in one that has the fake ladybug, if you can remember that.
In addition, there are new photos in the gallery, including the wolves, swans, Viktor, and more.
