Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2012 #1

Just got back from visiting the zoo today... highlights included...

Tian Tian was constantly at the divide between her and Yang Guang and he was sitting at the other side... both seemed extremely interested in each other.

Seeing the new Jaguar who was constantly calling to Mowgli the other Jaguar... sh seemed very playful and inquisitive... watching the crowd as well as trying to see him.

The female tiger appeared MUCH more settled and was also calling to Tibor the male... Seems like spring was definately in the air for the animals today....lol

Two of the new female chimps are receptive... and there was a few mating happening.

Another group of gentoo penguins are in pre export quarentine at the bottom of big cat row.

Actually got a goodpicture (hopefully) of the marbled polecats, the Northern Luzon Giant Rat and the giant anteaters were actually out and about.. not sleeping.. first time for me!!

I noticed that there are some work going on in the bongo paddock, three male Nyala were seperated off and were in the old camel enclosure. The three painted dogs were on show today even got a glimpse of the european otter.

The sealion was still in his pool at the front... i thought he had already left but he was still happily swimming... i didnt notice the new rockhopper penguins but didnt really have a chance to spend alot of time with the penguins today.

Think the funniest thing i did hear today was a woman tellin her daughter that the aardwolf was a tiger cause it had strips. Also another visitor being annoyed because they didnt stop the animals from going back indoors seen as she had paid good money to see them. Pretty sure she would have been happy with steel bars and cramp cages.

At the sunbear talk it was mentioned in the near future that one of the brothers would be leaving and a female would be sourced.

Had a really great if not exhausting day... will get the pictures on my flickr site as soon as i can

Oh and i didnt see a sign or indication of anywhere being altered to accomidate the meerkats

First person to hear 'Bleating' wins a prize. That's a sure sign of upcoming activity on that front apparently.

She was "bleating" yesterday... could see her stomach move as she was calling out to him

Well, I wonder if they will be acting on that? I know the 'science' in monitoring hormone levels etc has moved on a lot since the 1960's 'Chi Chi' days when that particular noise was thought to be a big pointer to oestrus. I think it still may be.

But didn't Edinburgh have meerkats up till a few years ago?, housed in a very good new enclosure next to the Asian short clawed otters, was not the reason for them being removed from the collection being that everyone had them?, sound to me like a case of "returning by popular demand!".

Yep, where the Sousliks are now. My 8 year old will be pleased, as he loves meerkats - he even had some 'pet' ones at his birthday party!

One would have been good, to get both in one trip is fantastic! Now if the skunks and the Beavers had been about as well, it would have been my idea of small mammal heaven!!

I'm visiting next month, it will be my first time to Edinburgh, can anyone give me any advice on seeing the pandas, is there a "best" time or quietest time to see them during the average day?

Reevesie

From my experience... ive been to see them four times.... three times were at 3pm... first the male was wandering about... second and third time they were both eating or sleeping.... fourth time i went at 10am and the female was wandering around as was the male eventho he was off show to us. I personally think i would go in the morning... as both seemed more active then... but i think its just luck really.

The staff are very good at allowing you time to see them if they are outside and its your time to go inside and vise versa.

Will also point out a list of species not to miss if it's your first visit, though this isn't by any means conclusive:

Koala
Malayan tapir
King penguin
Gentoo penguin
Northern rockhopper penguin
Buff-cheeked gibbon
Eastern aardwolf
Marbled polecat
Asiatic wild cat
Lesser kudu
Nyala
Maned wolf
North? Luzon cloud rat

There are a lot of others, but they're the ones that spring to mind :)
