I've been watching the new Safari 3D programme and have a few questions if any of you guys can help.

Why do Woburn continue to attempt brreding from a very old male,way past his prime? Would it not make more sense to put Shane into a deserved retirement and bring in new blood??

Why did they castrate three males instead of giving them vascetomy's. Castration prevents a mane and i think that is sad. Also an ammount of aggression in a pride is normal, most prides in Africa have coalition males so whats the problem.

Welcome to the forums :)

Shane (the older male you mention) passed away in Summer 2011. He has been replaced with a new male called Kasanga, who arrived from Holland in December (I think he's around two years old). Introductions are still ongoing but things are looking good so far...

I'm not really sure why the decided to castrate rather than perform a vasectomy. Prehaps someone else can answer that

the series cant have got to the episode with the sad passing of Shane.

I'm visiting Woburn with my 6 yr old son on Saturday (not sure who's more excited)

Looking forward to seeing Kasanga and the rest.

I believe his passing was shown the episoide just gone (Sat 25th Feb) but I've been busy over the weekend and haven't had chance to watch it yet so I'm not 100% sure...
 
I saw this weekends episode and it wasn't on it, but thats not important really, it is very sad when a magnificent animal dies even when its had a good innings and left a legacy.

This is just a guess, but because castration alters/can reduce 'maleness' could it be to prevent aggression? Vasectomy would prevent breeding but still leave these males as 'full' males and if aggression is an issue there, vasectomy wouldn't stop it.
 
I thought they maybe some aggression/violence with the three castrated males and the new male. Kasanga was born in 2008 in Holland, one of the Lionessess (Tyra I think) has took an instant liking to him and hopes are high for breeding.
 
I was wondering recently if they've shown the death of Shane. But it seems not as he was mentioned in one of the recent episodes.
 
I'm going to Woburn tomorrow too - I'll keep an eye out for the new male now as my last trip was about 3 years ago so the old fellah would have been present then. STA maybe see you there?
