Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2012

A few updates from a recent visit:

-Only saw 2 smooth coated otters, have the cubs now been moved onto different zoos?
-The Lemur walkthrough looks near enough complete and was quite impressed with it, really does look like the best lemur walkthrough i've seen!
-The enclosure which did house the Black and White Ruffed Lemurs is now empty with signage up stating redevelopment and the lemurs have been moved to the exhibit where the blue eyed lemurs were.
-Still no work on the Sun Bear enclosure
-Also saw the male Giraffe mating with one of the females...fingers crossed it was successful!

How is new rhino male Otto settling in?
Has he been well mixed with the breeding females?

BTW:
Saw this ghastly video from earlier where one of them was horned ... and pretty badly injured. The rhino under attack could hardly stand after and keepers tried from beyond the bars to shout off the attacking rhino.

Can't be certain of identification, but on Friday a large male was being hassled by a female and youngster (I think, guessing by sizes) -basically they were invading his personal space and he was retreating (walking backwards), luckily nothing flared up, but the potential to do so seemed to be there.

I was told by a keeper that Zamba will only move to Manor House this year if they can meet the safety standards plus build the enclosure.

Also has there been any more mating attempts with the Amur Leopards? Also how old is the male Red Panda and when do they reach sexual maturiaty??

As its a big year for the zoo does anyone think they try for a baby elephant? or expand the herd as they still have not replaced Rosa.

I just thought I'd say I was at the zoo a week on saturday and what I was really striked with was the size of Tiga. They did both seem to be alright though but I do sincerely hope that Rajang will be ok for the remainder of his life.

Presumably they can be separated if need be? Is there much interaction between them or do they do their own thing?

Yes they can be seperated. They used to interact a lot more than they do nowadays, since Tiga has started to mature a lot they seem to have been doing their own thing!

Do other zoos have wish lists like Colchester? Has anyone purchased anything for the zoo? I keep meaning to but every payday comes and quickly goes, although they do have some cheaper options!!

In the south east as far as I'm concerned it's spring not winter!!!

I just thought I'd ask why on earth are they redevolping the black and white ruffed lemur enclosure? This is a good exhibit and I find it odd them being kept in the small enclosure???

Aren't they going in the walk-through?
