I'll be very surprised if they can be kept together as full adults- it just doesn't normally work with Orangutan males and I suspect they will have to be split eventually.

Rajang's own father was either Jimmy or Paul, one of two Sumatran males who did live together at Chester as adults, but eventually they had to be seperated due to fighting and I believe in fact Jimmy later died from an infected bite he received during the fight.

I've always thought Rajang's father was Paul- they look very alike.
 
All the news on their website doesn't seem to suggest they will be in the walkthrough, it states Red Ruffed Lemurs and Ring-Tailed Lemurs. I thought Crowned Lemurs were also planned to be in it?? :confused:

With Regards to the empty enclosure with a new indoor enclosure added onto and higher stronger fences it could easily become a chimp enclosure like they stated they wanted to do in there zoo matters magazine?? (Just a thought???)
 
A snippet of news from the zoo website:
-Female golden lion tamarin, Shirley, successfully gave birth to a single offspring on the 24th February 2012. Shirley formed a breeding pair with male golden lion tamarin, Sebastian following his arrival from Peaugres Zoo, France in December 2010. The pair have successfully bred in the past, with the birth of twin girls named Spring and Summer in April 2011.
-Two adult, male ocellate river stingray arrived on the 29th Febnruary 2012. The stingray are housed alongside the pacu fish within the Worlds Apart exhibit and can be seen hiding amongst the sand at the bottom of the pool, or gliding along by their characteristic oscillated movement.
-Female meerkat Pippa gave birth to a litter of two pups on the 4th February 2012.
-Female silvery marmoset Olive, gave birth to twins on the 7th February 2012

Lemurs:
-Ring tailed and red ruffed are in the walkthrough to acclimatise.
-B+W ruffed are in the old RT lemur enclosure
-Blue Eyed Black Lemurs are back in their old enclosure at out of Africa
Golden Mantella Frogs due to replace the Reed Frogs in KOTW building soon.
Saw the new Stingrays, but not too sure what has happened to the 4 juveniles that arrived last year- they seem to have disappeared and I'll try to find out next visit.

How disappointing the original concept art had far more exciting lemur species than these two. The enclosure looks great though.
 
It is difficult to introduce a large mixed group of lemurs to an exhibit if not previously mixed. I imagine more species will follow, but gradual introductions seem likely. Far better a visible, active group than individuals having to be separated or species rotated due to aggression.
 
Also visited yesterday; only thing to add is that the old Black-and-white ruffed lemur enclosure by the Cheetahs is still empty, but now has signs for the L'Hoest's monkeys and Rock hyrax.

In the new edition of Zoo Matters it says that the L'Hoest monkeys will be moving into the old colobus monkey/b&w ruffed lemur enclosure opposite the cheetahs.

This will then allow their old enclosure to be part of the planned extension of Chimp World.
 
Wonder whether they will add any more Chimps to the group, as there has not been any major changes in quite a while would be quite interesting to see! Will the L'Hoest monkeys just be from the chimp world (I may be wrong) but i believe there are at least 2/3 that are in where Dende the Amur leopard and then the smooth coated otters were housed?

On a visit a couple of days ago they were building something outside the main entrance? Also does anyone know what they are doing to the Kingdom of the Wild enclosure?
 
More news;

Arrival of 4.0 Rock hyrax from Osnabruck, joining them will be as mentioned the group of L'Hoest's Monkeys. There current enclosure will be re-developed as part of the Chimpanzee exhibit extension.
 
Any news on the elephant breeding program? I know Opal had a still birth in 2010, but other than that has there been any notable news? Breedings, pregnancies, announcement?

Interesting - Osnabruck's Rock Hyrax are Syrian Rock Hyrax (Procavia capensis syriacus), so presumably these are they. If so, that's the third pure subspecies of Rock Hyrax in the UK (after P. c. jayakari at Cotswold/Longleat and P. c. capensis at Chester).

-Signage is up to confirm that the Chimps outdoor will "double" in size
-Ring Tailed Lemurs and Red Ruffed Lemurs both out in the new walkthrough enclosure
-Lion Rock now has colourful strips above enclosure on wires (I guess to put off birds landing in the enclosure)
-Another Aardvark has been born! Could see it on the LCD television inside Aardvark Burrow!
-Rufous Hornbills are now getting very bright and colourful
-Kingdom of the wild has had a re-vamp with new enrichments in the paddock
-Also saw a Asian Short Clawed Otter collecting straw/grass/rocks and taking them inside the otter house...possibility of nest building maybe??

Did you see anything of the rock hyraxes at all, as I am visiting tomorrow and want to be sure that I don't miss them.

Excellent news about the Aardvarks, though the male must be getting close to being very well represented genetically now. One suspects that the adornments to the Lion enclosure might be prompted by the unpleasantness a few weeks back...
 
Yesterday's Visit

Visited yesterday, and wondered about those flags on the lion enclosure but...

The Lemur Walk-Through is very nice once inside but the queuing to get onto the train in order to get in was annoying. I don't know why they had to set it up like this.

As said before renovation in Kingdom of the Wild including a shade structure for the giraffes that all three seemed very curious about.

Zamba getting very boisterous chasing the giraffes away which was very amusing.

Golden Mantella to arrive at Kingdom of the Wild.
