I am planning a trip to Blackbrook Zoo via public transport have worked out how to get there, but once there could people who have already been to the collection give me details or information on the species they hold and what are the rare species they hold.

I know it’s mostly birds but I love bird collections and there are some British birds in the collection but the rarer the better any help and information would be great.

Will write a review on the visit hope to go within the next three weeks.

EDIT - I will e visiting Slimbridge later in the year is it worth visitng both and if so what are the species the one holds and the other doesn't please any help

I can't help you with your species list, but just wanted to say how much I loved my visit to Blackbrook. I'm not a bird fan so wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much. Will definitely visit it again.

My big advice would be make sure that you don't miss the exhibits in the car park. I nearly missed the tawny frog mouth and some super owls.

Species list, some are no longer kept.

Don't miss the two species of steamer ducks, helmeted curasow, African open-billed stork, Maguari Stork, Buff-necked Ibis, Bare-faced Go-away Bird, White-bellied Go-Away Bird, Chinese Merganser, two subspecies of Sandhill Crane, Black-necked Crane, two species of Pond Heron.

Also don't miss the amphibian room below the Education Room opposite the cafe.

Also note that some aviaries are only visible from the car park.

Don'e expect to be able to identify everything, the labelling is very poor.

Thanks for that Zoogiraffe.

Also link is not working, search for Winkhill on the Zootierliste site to get the species inventory.

Not a problem also worth noting that they don't have any species of Crowned Pigeons now either as they went to a private collection.

The best advice is not to visit a waterfowl collection too late in the year if you want to see ducks at their best, by midsummer many of the drakes are in eclipse plumage.
Slimbridge has hides looking over wild areas, so you can see Bewick's swans and a few white-fronted geese plus most of the species of ducks, but only for the next few weeks for some of these species. It also has all the species of flamingo (but only 1 James' left according to ISIS), European cranes, redshank, black-winged stilts, avocets plus American otter, European beaver (invisible), water vole, water shrew and harvest mouse, plus a few tropical birds in the Tropical House. To the best of my memory the only species of duck that I have seen at Slimbridge which is not also kept at Blackbrook is the freckled duck.
Blackbrook has a much wider collection of birds, some of which have been mentioned already, including a few pheasants, several owls, a nice collection of pelicans, several species of ibis, Humboldt's penguins (with spectacled eiders), ratites including Darwin's rheas, a good collection of cranes and secretary birds. Plus sitatunga, some lemurs and, of course, meerkats ;)

For Blackbrook - check the weather forecast! The site is high up in the Staffordshire moors, and it can be very cold. Be prepared! And have a decent breakfast, because the cafe won't provide much in the way of hot fare.

Many thanks for all the information just one more question are there any more good bird collections in the UK

Well seeing as most are either closing or been run down, about the only one that springs to mind is Lotherton Hall Bird Garden.

@Clouded Leopard visited Birdland just a few days ago and loved it a great little place where if you love birds you can spend all day no problem
Will be visitng again about September time
