Idi Amin dies in Belo Horizonte, Brazil

A bit off topic, but Imbi and Kifta from Howletts are affected too by Idi's death. Here is what I found in the news (some parts were auto-translated from Portuguese):

Idi Amin died in the morning of March 7, 2012. He suffered from diseases such as renal failure and chronic osteoarthritis. Due to advanced age and the joint action of these diseases, and even with intensive treatment, his status worsened in recent weeks. This morning, as Idi showed no improvement, an intervention for parenteral hydration became necessary. Because of his weakened state, Idi suffered an cardiac arrest during the clinical procedure and died at 11 a.m. Brazilian time.

Idi was the last remaining gorilla in South America.

The zoo could not confirm whether Idi's mating attempts - three with Imbi and one with Kifta - were enough for one of them to get pregnant. The females had to be separated from Idi last December when he suffered from a skin infection on his forearm. It has not yet been decided if they will stay in Belo Horizonte.

On February 26 Mumba gave birth to a baby (sire: Djala), sex still unknown. In the news they say it's Djala's 15th offspring - he is a quite busy and successful silverback it seems. :)

I was just thinking the other day, what would happen to these two females if Idi died? Well, he has now.:(

I imagine the most likely scenario is that Howletts will send them a male in due course.

The mother of this baby, Mumba, is supposedly the grandaughter of one of their early males Mumbah, who was later sent to Columbus USA. I say 'supposedly' as Mumbah had only one named offspring f. 'Shumba' (Mumbah x Mushie) and he has never bred again in all his time at Columbus Zoo. I sometimes wonder how certain Howletts were of this parentage and whether Shumba's father was in fact Djoum, rather than Mumbah, as they lived as a trio for some time though I don't know if they could prove it datewise- now lost in time no doubt.

Whichever male was the father makes Shumba and her descendants important.

And any male descendants of Djoum that turned out halfway as impressive as him would be an animal worth seeing.

It would be nice to know which male really was the father of Shumba. Djoum has very few descendants but he should have had more really- if Jomie had bred at ZSL and sister Djouli had not died at Howletts.
 
Males, Ngoro and Awali were transfered from Barcelona to Amneville last week... Amneville will also be recieving an additional male from Ramat Gan in the near future

Thanks. These two are a Silverback(Awali) and a six year old (Ngoro). It also explains what will happen to Awali longterm as he completely failed to breed at Barcelona (he is too humanised) I guess he won't see females again now.

I think they are also having the bachelor group formed at Valle de Singes ( Jersey Ya Kwanza + four young males) so this will mean two bachelor groups at Amneville in the future.

I am presuming that as there are two Silverbacks (Ya Kwanza & Awali) who are complete strangers to each other, that they will be kept in two groups rather than one. Any one know for sure if that's correct?

In your Flickr family chart write-up, you say Ya Kwanza's offspring were both male- Ya Pili was a female.

This group has gone great guns since the arrival of male Buzandi from Australia, though it has had a few problems too. Initially Buzandi attacked females and injured an offspring of the previous male Arti- that is natural behaviour-before he settled down in the group. But he also more recently attacked one of his own offspring(I believe he killed it by throwing it against a wall?) The Zoo had noticed he became stressed by the attitude of several regular visitors who behaved by vocally remonstrating with him over his 'bad' behaviour and that this type of 'visitor confrontation' may have been the root of his hostility. So these visitors were asked by the zoo to alter their behaviour and to appear meek and submissive to him instead. This seems to have improved his attitude for the better.

Are Gorillas complex creatures or what?:)

Now posted in the Australia/Taronga park forums(Gorilla Troop thread) that their new male has already arrived. He is 'Kibali' (Yaounde x Moseka) born 2001 in the Vallee des Singes group in France. He is still a blackback and has been introduced to at least one female(the young Kimya) but presumbly not to the other older females until after their old silverback and his two oldest sons in the group are removed shortly.

'Kibali' is halfbrother to Jersey's new male 'Badongo' though two years younger than him.
