Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp News 2012

Apparently blijdorp has added painted and milky stork to their collection according to zootierliste. No news on their website, I think they might be kept in the Asian aviary. As there going to renew that! I'd hope they'll get some new species like Greater Adjudant or Storm's Stork!
 
1.0 milky and 2.0 painted storks arrived for the revamped Asian aviary according to people on the dutch zoosite.

According to the newyears-speech by the zoo director, 3.0 giant elephant shrews will arrive from Houston in exchange for three male elephants. I think the elephant moves are being discussed elsewhere on this forum, but speculations are that it'll be three young males from three different bulls that are well-represented in the European population.

The new butterfly building will be opened before easter 2013, it promises to be the biggest butterfly-house in the BeNeLux. The announced adjacent night-exhibit (and jaguar exhibit) has been postponed due to financial reasons (shame!).
 
Good news :) Wow, I read on the tiergarten website that they where interested in aquiring another male out of africa. But 3, cool! It's a good deal, blijdorp has male elephants and will keep breeding! The butterfly house will be interesting, hope they will keep some hummingbird species as well.

So I'm assuming the Rotterdam will be getting young males from elsewhere in Europe and transfer them all from one location?
 
I'm guessing they will be sent directly from whereever they are sourced. As far as I know, Rotterdam is still EEP holder of the asian elephant EEP and there's a huge need for capacity to keep young bulls. There are at least 5 waiting at Emmen alone in the coming years...

As said in the Prague zoo thread, Douanita and Tonya are preparing to be transferred to zoo praha!
 
They will change the shape of the aviary, to a more cubical shape so that the birds have more space to fly. Also the bridge will be adjusted and several species (except the 2 stork species some pigeons b.e.) added.
 
I visited Rotterdam Zoo earlier this year and I loved it but I have a favour to ask from any of the dutch speakers here. There was a sign near the South American area that was all in dutch and looked like the type of sign that would be put up to show off some future plans. Hopefully I've attached it properly but it shows what looks like a domed rain forest exhibit called 'Amazonica'. Is this the butterfly house that has been mentioned in earlier posts? And it looks like it will be quite a bit bigger than just a butterfly house. Do you think it will have any other species?

Yes, this is the butterfly-dome. And it will have other species; south-american reptiles and piranha's. Also some birdspecies will be added, at least hummingbirds, I'm not sure thoug what other species will be housed here.
 
Not a Dutch-speaker (though my roots are Dutch), but here's the loose translation according to an online translator:

This area includes an indoor Amazona - experience in a large transparent dome especially butterflies, a special greenhouse for bromeliads and forms a dark part nocturnal. Amazonica in the visitor is immersed in the fascinating plants - and animals of the largest rainforest in the world.

Amazonica accommodates approximately 1000 butterflies, a number of other insects, many tropical trees and flowers, piranhas, poison dart frogs, large river turtles, anacondas, large lizards and possibly some species of birds. But the night life is exciting with sloths, night monkeys, armadillos, anteaters and tree prehensile tail porcupines.

Thanks for that Johnny and Anyhuis. I tried to translate it but I must have typed a lot of it wrong because it didn't make a lot of sense. This new addition will make an already spectacular zoo even better. I'd love to get back there when it's finished.

There'll be a Nighthouse too. But there isn't enough money to make that in 2013. So that will be come later..
 
Like Niels says, the nocturnal area and the greenhouse for bromelia's will be build later. The most important part of the project, the butterfly dome with invertebrates, reptiles and fish will be build in 2013.
 
Thanks for the responses and the pictures. As I said before, Rotterdam Zoo is my favourite zoo that I've visited, and the addition of another tropical house to add to the riviera hall, crocodile river, and the elephant/rhino/tapir house will help to make this one of the finest zoos in, not only Europe, but the world.
 
You do realise that they are pulling most of the reptile collection out of the riviera hall? If this continues, there will not be much left to enjoy in the riviera hall.
