Species Found Only In U.S. Zoos

Vancouver Zoo never had mountain tapirs, it was the Mountain View Conservation Centre which returned the tapirs to the US (San Francisco I believe, which were then sent on to the Cali Zoo in Colombia).

That doesn't sound right. Before Mountain View Conservation Center changed there was 4 places with Mountain Tapirs. The LA zoo just received a pair from San Francisco, which were later sent to the Cali Zoo. That means that there should still be a pair at the Mountain View Conservation Center.

After a little research I think you're probably right. Serves me right for relying on memory rather than researching it. Thanks.

I'm so sorry  I quickly googled "mountain tapirs in canada" and assumed the british columbia institution mentioned was vancouver. Upon looking at Mountain view's website they still have Mountain tapir in their collection.

I'd be willing to place big bets on Japanese mountain hawk eagles being kept in Japanese zoos...

I was thinking that too, but had yet to find evidence for it.
quick google search just now found references for Kyoto and Ueno Zoos, and in 2008 a (possible world-first) breeding at Kushiro City Zoo

well you know me, I get intrigued and then like digging up information

Does anybody know of any tree pangolins in African zoos? If not, San Diego's may be the only one in captivity. And whatever San Diego's mystery pig is, whether it be forest hog or not, is another possibility.

if the mystery pig is a forest hog then there are forest hogs in Entebbe; if it is a bush pig then they are commonplace. Either way, not a winner.

Drat, what about the pangolin?

This is fun, thanks BeardsleyZooFan for starting this.

I've never been to Africa (yet) but I have a feeling its probably similar to Asia in that there are probably lots of little local zoos dotted around that have a constant stream of wild-caught critters passing through, and if that is the case then I'd hazard a guess that white-bellied pangolins and others are probably seen quite frequently (albeit probably for only short periods!).

For what its worth, Zootierliste records former holdings for six European zoos, the most recent being Paris in 2006-7

just a few:
*Californian brown pelicans are also kept, for example, at Halle and Walsrode (Germany)
*Calamian deer are kept in the Philippines
*I'm pretty sure there are Coquerel's sifakas in captivity in Madagascar (at the least they are kept free-range in two or more places in Antananarivo, for instance [the Croc Farm and the Lemur Park])

[I don't know enough about reptile holdings to talk about the others you listed]

According to ISIS, my source for my list of species in zoos, none of these are in "zoos" outside of the USA. The Brown Pelicans kept in Germany are not Californian. The Philippines have no "zoos" listed that exhibit Calamian Deers. Nor are the facilities in Antananarivo listed as "zoos" according to ISIS. And if there is any zoo in Mexico or elsewhere that exhibit California Condors, please provide a source of reference. Other than wild releases south of the US border, I can find no evidence that they exist in any zoo outside of America. And isn't this thread dealing with species not found outside of American "zoos" not including reserves? I stand by my list.
